Rugged senior forward Jack Smith, a state tournament standout last spring and top player in the Upper Midwest High School Elite League this fall, is nursing a shoulder injury that might sideline him for the rest of the season. The Minnesota Duluth commit is seeking a second opinion on the extent of the injury and his ability to play, but there’s little chance he’ll be back on the ice soon.
Thanks Stang!

Wow with Smith out Cathedral becomes very normal. Will be a tough night up in Hermantown on Friday.

Bigger implications are that 6A is now WIDE OPEN Alexandria and Little Falls just became instant State Tournament Contenders not that they werent but this really evens out the field. What tough Blow for Cathedral losing a top-end talent like Smith kills their hopes of a repeat quest. Ohh well no one going to feel to sorry for a Private School.

Hermantown, Warroad, EGF ..... Seem to be the locked in Top 3

This news shakes up Class A and 6A in big way.

Any news on the Hagstrom Boy at Mahtomedi will he be back? If not Gentry might be able to give them a run in 4A.
do you know anything about SCC’s roster? Losing Smith is big..but saying this makes Alexandria and or Little Falls basically even? You either don’t like SCC or don’t know much about their roster. Even without Smith they have 2 D1 commits ( how many does Alex and little falls have?). On top of that they have 3 more that will play D 1 at some point...6 HS Elite players...How many for Alex or LF? with Smith out it went from 99% to 85% chance of winning 6A. Ends their chances at a repeat? Ummm okay🙄

Just one opinion. You don't lose a Jack Smith type talent and just simply be ok. SCC is still in my book a top 10-15 Class A Program without Smith this year. They do have great talent not taking away from those kids as all but come on losing Smith kills and the Depth takes a serious hit. Like I said Take away Biondi, Parker, Slukensky etc... Those programs would not be the same. Also, we saw last year when Warner went down it was not the same team until he was able to return.

I think you are not giving enough credit to Alexandria or Little Falls. Both are well-coached and why they may not have the high-end "Elite League" talent this year they will be a tough out. The Little Falls is young and pesky and getting better every game and they have a Goalie who is a stud and in a one and done playoff game losing a front line player like Smith kills also Alexandria has already proven to be a Giant Killer when they upset a more talented SCC and Hermantown Squad two years ago so their Seniors this year who were sophomores then know how to make a run.

Section 6A just got way more interesting with SCC losing Smith for the year. It's a huge blow and too bad for the kid gave up the USHL to play with his buddies and now it sounds like he will not get to chance to finish a very good high school career. Hate seeing that kind of stuff.

SCC is still a very good team but I am sorry without Smith that's a big blow. I wish you and your boys luck I am more bummed we don't get to see the full Cathedral Team anymore.

Again, one person's opinion but I know Little Falls and Alexandria just got some big news in their pursuit of a 2020 Section Title.

i hear ya...and again Smith is a huge loss..but they still have 5 elite league kids on that team and three more that should have made elite league. and comparing the upset from two years ago is not the same. That Alex team was deeper with much better top end talent in Westlund and Doughtery..and that SCC team was very freshman/sophomore heavy. I don’t discount little falls and Alexandria, but again, even without smith it would be a HUGE upset it they knocked off SCC. both rosters aren’t even close in depth or top end talent to SCC...but that’s why they play the games, right? should be fun regardless

Very true and I wish all teams the best. I was just noting that SCC losing Smith really hurts but its a credit to the player he is but again SCC still tough.

Should be fun and more just bummed to lose such a high end player from the Class A Landscape.

I think ClassAGuy has more of an anti-private school bias than a lack of knowledge of SCC's roster. I always mentally modify his rankings to move private schools up a spot or two for a more realistic idea of where these teams are at. Just my opinion, anyway.

Yeah......I think SCC will still have way more talent than pretty much any class A school they play.......Little Falls and Alex included.....with or without Smith.

1. IMVHO, Smith is SCC's best player and this is a huge loss for them.
2. SCC is still the heavy favorite in the section.
3. Jack Smith absolutely made the right decision staying in high school rather than going to the USHL.
4. Losing Smith had the effect of making an upset in the section possible. With him it would have been almost impossible (again, IMVHO).

Well, of course you’re correct Mite-dad...Jack Smith is a tUMD recruit & also turned down an invite to NTDP☝️ Sorry to hear about his shoulder issue.

North Branch with a VERY good 6-2 win over Superior. I’m sure the coaches demanded their full potential after that lopsided LF loss...

Yeah, that score definitely caught my eye. Superior seems to be a bit down this year, but they are always one of the better Wisconsin teams. Croal and Kerchner lit the lamp a bunch. NB has a huge game against Monticello next Thursday, and a win would really improve their section standing.

The Monticello and Pine City games will be interesting... I agreed with you at the beginning of the season that North Branch’s schedule looked very weak, but there ended up being quite a few strong teams on the schedule.

Hermantown’s tie with Cathedral must make the Very Normal. Apparently Cathedrals demise was greatly exaggerated. Those two teams are far and away the two best in Class A.

Warroad might take exception; they're undefeated and did handle Cathedral 5-2 earlier in the season.

Wow Hermantown was up 5-1 on their home ice playing Cathedral team missing their one of their top players and they give up FOUR unanswered goals....YIKES!!

Warroad if they take business today will move up to #1 in my rankings they beat a Cathedral team missing Warner but they took care of business. If they beat DL tody whch they should they will be #1 heading into "THE GAME" vs. Roseau next week.

Wondering if maybe Hermantown needs to expand their recruiting footprint or move down to Class B.

Just my opinion...but after seeing all three teams, if everything stays the same roster wise, Hermantown and SCC are better and deeper than Warroad. Of course Warroad absolutely has bragging rights after they beat SCC up there. Second game of the year, long travel, and no warner for SCC (and maybe some championship hangover attitudes by their guys). they play again, on a neutral, non olympic size sheet , I love SCC’s chances. No disrespect to Warroad...They are a top 3 team all day long...but in a one and done, I’ll take SCC or Hermantown right now.

Actually not your mistake. The scorer for Htown is entering things wrong, each time entered is the clock time, not the elapsed time of the period. So each period, the order on hub is backwards of what happened.

Statement win over an under .500 club. Take away their 9-2 loss to Hermantown, and this is the clear cut favorite in Class A.
