Absolutely! They should also have personal chefs, valets, sports psychologists and a posse.
Re: Should hockey players have agents...
Many of the elite prospects already do have advisors or consultants, which are essentially agents by another name. It’s far less common among MSHSL players compared to the AAA and major junior ranks.

High School players? Don’t get me started.

It’s a real thing. Has been for 8-9 years.

Yes. Best guideline for this I've seen is from College Hockey, Inc. that suggests a family advisor if the player is an NHL Draft prospect.

Very poor advice. Future pros without a family advisor really run the risk of being less informed and unprepared for things that come their way. There are so many solid guys that take on clients at no cost, why would a sure-fire NHL pick not use their services in their draft year?

the question was “Do players need agents?” not “Do players need advisers?”

Re: Should hockey players have agents...
Yes. Semantics. The guys who do valid family adviser work are registered player agents.
Not sure why any of this matters. Seems like a stupid post on a HS message board. There are so few kids in that world and hundreds of great kids who are really good hockey players that make HS hockey in Minnesota so wonderful. Amazing few days that serves as a reminder for how lucky people are here. Best model anywhere.

A talented player looking to play juniors or college should get help between their Soph/Jr year or in their U16AAA year. They start getting bombarded with camp invites and tryouts plus June before Junior year in high school colleges can officially talk to them. They need to be getting sound advice about grades, and ACT/SAT, the NCAA Clearinghouse, how to talk to coaches and scouts, the USHL and NAHL drafts, staying and playing HS vs sitting the bench early in juniors. They may get approached by Canadian teams which sounds great but ruins NCAA eligibility. A good advisor helps them navigate the long-term goal vs the short-term ego boosting carrot.

If your kid is pretty good, (will play Juniors in States, the "W" or college hockey) ask your friends at the rink, your coach, high school counselor. You will get enough information to navigate the process. If your kid is very good, ask your friends at the rink, your coach, high school counselor, a friend who has a son who is playing college hockey. You will get enough information to navigate the process. Golden Rule, you don't receive any benefit and you don't pay anyone, you will be fine. Also, these kids probably will be participating in the 15's, 16's and or 17's or Elite League. During this process the parents and kids will be told numerous times about the process and what can and can't be done. You can also look at the NCAA Clearinghouse website to get all the information you need. GB
