Wow, The Exiled One, you were reading my mind. I saw a comment about Shaugabay having a lot of points for being a freshman and it brought me back to the frosh scoring threads that I used to put together. I got some cr@p for that along the way. There were a few years when a Luverne frosh (or 8th grader) led the way (Chaz Smedsrud, Jaxon Nelson) and some posters couldn't accept that, blaming Luverne's schedule when the players have NOTHING to do with the schedule. Southern hockey is improving, but still trails the metro, central, and northern Minnesota for talent pools.

I am still a bit surprised by Mound Westonka. They came down to Marshall for the T-giving tourney and lost to both Fargo Davies (not surprising) and Pine City Area (surprising). But they have now beaten both Hutchinson and Litchfield, who are the top dogs in Section 3A.

Anway, with some down time this Christmas and New Years break, I might take you up on the offer to get the frosh scoring thread going again. It was always interesting to see who "broke out" during their 9th grade year.

Okay, here goes.

I started with the 'A' and 'B' schools, checking each roster for 9th or 8th graders. Then I start putting a list together, slowly. Eventually, we will get a comprehensive list that doesn't leave out any school or any player. I also remember using the % of a team's goals that a player is involved with (goals+assists/team goals) to determine how valuable they are to their team, not necessarily NHL scouts or D1 college coaches.

So far, just from the A & B schools.

(Games) Goals-Assists
8 points
Bryce Laager - Blaine (7) 3-5
5 points
Isaac Schermerhorn - Bagley-Fosston (7) 2-3
4 points
Carter Ranning - Apple Valley (8) 2-2
3 points
Jack Bartfield - AHA (7) 0-3

So we have a Cayden and a Caden. Whatever happened to names like Bob or Tom?

Caden Morgan is an impressive young defenseman for Breck. He played in the top levels of the Edina youth system and is a smooth, strong skater. Morgan is one of the few good young players on that team.

Yes, going through all of these names I am struck by the exits of the Jims and Bobs, and entries of the Caydens, Cadens, and etc.

Kittson Central downed Windom 9-3 in a North vs South battle. Tyler Hennen (g, 2a) and Hayden Olsonawski (a) got points for KC and Brady Espenson (a) for Windom.

Snuggerud got a goal and 3 assists in a 5-4 Chaska win over Prior Lake, and a single goal in a 5-4 loss to Eden Prairie.

Eighth grader Wyatt Farrell scored 2 of La Cresent's 3 goals in a loss to Austin.

Top point totals:

(Games) Goals-Assists (% involvement in team goals)
22 points
Jayson Shaugabay – Warroad (8) 6-16
21 points
Tyler Hennen - Kittson CC (9) 6-15

Oliver Moore – Totino-Grace (11) 2-15
15 points
Eli Fletcher – Prairie Centre (9) 13-2 (65%)
Wyatt Farrell 8th - LaCrescent (10) 11-4 (41%)

I am not much of a fan of having Freshman on varsity (especially in AA where many of those teams would have the depth to avoid it but there are always a few who belong) Now that the season is drawing to an end which of these guys has proven they belong with the big boys in AA?

From what I saw this year top guys who surely belong include:

Snuggerud, Clark, Tuccitto, Luedke.

Others?

Haven't seen him but Oliver Moore is putting up some numbers for Totino so I assume 30pts on varsity means he belongs.

For the most part I agree with your statement. Charlie Stramel from Rosemount is another who definitely fits in.

Landon Gunderson of Maple Grove had a respectable freshman year

If you for sure want to see JImmy Snuggerud in person, you better get to see him in the next few weeks, because guessing he will get the call from NTDP and he may be an early depart.

Going just by stats, these guys plus Stramel and Gunderson are all at least top eight in team scoring. There are a couple of AA freshmen who have more points but are lower in team scoring, like Laager for Blaine or Jake Fisher for CDH.

Speaking of CDH, freshman Simon Houge is eighth in team scoring as a defenseman. That portends well.

Other AA freshmen of note include Cayden Casey (fifth in team scoring for Elk River) and Luke Sawicky (fourth in team scoring for Osseo).

For class A, the ones I think demand to be noticed are Shaugabay, Bradley Walker from Orono, Max Krebsback from Mound Westonka, Jaksen Panzer from EGF, defenseman Caden Morgan from Breck, and 8th grader Wyatt Farrell from La Crescent who is leading his team in goals and points.

Watched the stream of EGF-SCC Jaksen Panzer (18 goals) he looked like he was the best player on EGF. He was definitely not outplayed by the SCC top line. He is going to be fun to watch!

I was at the game. He was the best player, not only on EGF, but on the ice. Seen him play several times this year and is a fun player to watch.

Panzer really improved by leaps and bounds during the season. I recall watching EGF against Orono in the first game of the year, and Panzer was a non-factor, looking a bit overwhelmed. By mid-season he had become an important cog in the lineup, and he was absolutely dominant Saturday like you stated. Panzer definitely has a bright future ahead.
