I hope the MSHSL goes back to a "play where you live" model.

So if a kid open enrolls to another HS they can't play Varsity sports?

Minnesota was at the forefront of open enrollment so I don't see that even being legal.

Nope, just still "play where you live". If you want to open-enroll at George Bailey Academy for the academic opportunities, then so be it. Just play your Varsity sports where you live still. If you live there, why would that be an inconvenience? If the state did this, open enrollment for "academic opportunities" would dry up like the Aral Sea (and we'd get back to the MN model instead of the club hockey-like teams we're seeing).

While I agree there needs to be some tweaks to open enrollment rules, this is looking at it with blinders on. So a family decides that George Bailey Academy is a better fit than their local public HS - academically, socially and athletically. The student aspires to play varsity sports but wants to play on teams with his new friends and for his new school. Instead, he is forced to make the decision to stop playing sports or go play with kids he may have moved on from in the first place. “Why would that be an inconvenience?” Really? Think about the logistics. Getting the student from one school to another every day for practice, games, etc. How about the awkwardness of the athlete going back to the school they left? Not to mention the backlash when tryouts come around. Little chance he’s making that team over a student at the school. Although this example is public to private transfer, the points stand for public to public.

When an athlete/family makes the decision to move to another school, it should be done with all factors considered, including rules and ramifications if it doesn’t work out - for whatever reason and at whatever timing. Do your homework in advance and this doesn’t happen. In this case, sitting a year (not even) at the age he is at is not the end of the world, nor would it be for any level player. Play JV, learn your life lesson, be a leader by continuing the work ethic that got you to this point, then tear up varsity when the door opens. The open enrollment ship has sailed. Needs improvement to prevent other ridiculously egregious transfers that some of his future teammates have done, but it’s here to stay.

With all of this hand wringing in regard to EP recruiting kids / transfers I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on Lakeville South.

You have 3 kids leave Farmington who are currently on the LS Bantam AA and 1 other kid who is a 9th grader who left Farmington for LS varsity. You also have a kid who was probably best player at B'ville transfer to LS and is also playing on LS BAA team.

That's 5 kids who just magically showed up on your doorstep.

This has been going on for years with public schools. HS or Bantam coach brings kids to new school for 9th grade. Minnetonka, Lakeville North and now Lakeville South have been major players in this scheme.

Tonka is nowhere near the top of this list.

Are the public schools doing a better job of recruiting than the private schools?

Think of it this way....It could be similar to that of college hockey... The colleges today that seem to be enjoying the most success are the ones patiently waiting to offer scholarships...Meanwhile other schools (like the U) will early commit every crafty, stick handling 15 year old in the metro area. One waits patiently and the other simply rolls the dice

As it relates to High School

Private schools are recruiting kids at a younger age (8th grade)

Public schools can wait until the last minute, find out what pieces they are missing and recruit from there (Like Edina did last year with their goalie)

The longer you wait...the more you can assure yourself of getting the "real deal".....or that "missing piece"

So who has the advantage - public or private...I think over time public schools will look, feel and smell more like a private school when it comes to hockey...In the basketball space, Hopkins has been a "private" school for years.
