What do you mean by this?
I assume he means they will either cease to exist as a program (Marshall) or move to Class A? That seems like a big leap of logic for CEC, though.

Also, you can’t have a section with fewer than eight teams, so you would need to throw St. Cloud and someone else in the mix for the “northern” section.
That's not true. 2014-2017 section 2AA only had 7 teams
Huh, I’ll be darned. Bad assumption on my part since I assumed the point of having 64 teams plus opt-ups in AA was have 8 sections of 8 teams minimum. I guess things don’t always work out so neatly.

There was also a year or two when 8AA only had 7 teams.

You go to that alignment and it just about becomes an all metro state tournament being there is rarely a participant from the southern part of the state. There needs to be two schools potentially representing the north down at the Excel!

Yeah I would agree. Better to have 2 mostly northern sections instead of 1 all north section. The northern boys have been doing a fine job lately of representing the 218 at the X.

They also hosted last season, but got "upset" by Elk River.

To Forest Lake's credit, they brought a very good crowd; you could tell one side of the arena was excited to be in this game, and the other was just sort of nervous about it. East's very passive forecheck, which was their Hail Mary for giving Andover a good game, just didn't generate much of anything and left the team looking pretty anemic. When the 5-minute major started, I told Danny that if they didn't score there, the season was over. Sure enough, Flake took the lead not long thereafter.

It'll be a weird Saturday at Amsoil, but I'll be there nonetheless. Credit to Flake for pulling it off.
Thinking of finding something orange and joining the Halloween Machine.

After years of making a point to wear orange at the X and then cheer for DLH-East, it would be great to see some East and Cloquet fans at Amsoil joining the orange army. It's like a family - beat the snot out of each other until someone outside the family picks a fight with one of the brothers; then everyone is on the same side.

For the uninitiated, Thunderhawk juice is a mixture of Orange Crush, Tang, and frozen orange juice concentrate. It'll keep you going.

I don’t think anything is in stone if ER wins & Andover wins. But LOGICALLY...if that’s the case...it makes way more sense to play the game at Fogerty (on a Thursday school night) ☝️Let’s play the games first thou before getting ahead of ourselves [-X

Hockey is already metro centric as is all the sports, that is where the population resides.

Out state is getting older by the year and school enrollments dwindle each passing year. makes zero sense to have 2 northern team in one section. Where are your big hockey numbers coming from with no industry and no jobs?

Times and demographics stand to reason one northern section. Oh and what politicians are ramming down your throat in northern counties wont improve matters in the future.

Rochester hockey numbers used to drive section 1 success. Those days are over. Research the demographics of Rochester there you will find your answer.

Agree to disagree. There's just too many good hockey programs up north still. By cramming them all to one section it'll be Moorhead or Duluth east at state most years. Instead of both. And not sure how much sense it makes to have two teams in the same section on opposite sides of the state.

We've been hearing the fear mongering for years that northern hockey is dying... sure some small schools are struggling but it's a far cry from having to reorganize the 218 into one section...

Your logic is flawed from a statistical standpoint.... Just take a quick look at section 6. Many good teams that won't make it to tourney. Riddle me this, there aren't really enough teams in 218 to make up a section, so how do you rationalize that they should have potentially 2 state tournament berths? For easy math, lets say 64 teams in AA, 8 a section, 8 teams in 218..... hmmmmm looks to me like 1/8 is representative of 218 doesn't it? Nope, 218 is entitled to potentially 2 spots because we are 218....

That's one way of looking at it. But geography isn't the only factor for forming the sections. For example, the Lake Conference has seven teams, or 10.9% of the state's AA teams (7/64), but the League has split the teams into three sections, allowing them the opportunity at 37.5% of the tournament field. Until this year, the Lake had 5 teams (7.8% of the state) in 2 sections, and have typically won both (25% of the AA field). By geography Edina, EP, Tonka, and Wayzata, should be in the same section. Why are they entitled to a greater representation? Because there's also the effort to get the best teams in the tournament, and these teams perform well enough to "deserve" or "earn" the extra spot, and have backed it up by acquitting themselves well at the tournament. And....teams like Blake, BSM, and Holy Family (among others) still have a path to State. In fact, it's possible (not probable) that the Lake gets no entrants this year, which would be appropriate if other teams play their way into the field.

This isn't new. In the 1980s during the one-class tournament days, it wasn't uncommon for the Lake South to get 3 teams into the tournament, typically some combination of Jefferson, Kennedy, Edina, Minnetonka, and Burnsville. And of course going back further, sections 7 and 8 had the "backdoor" to state, assuring 3 teams each year.

In sections 7 & 8 these days, Moorhead, Roseau, Grand Rapids, and East have also acquitted themselves well at the State tournament. In just 2015 through 2018, these teams had 1 championship, 3 runners-up, and a 3rd place finish at State. Whether that means they still "deserve" multiple paths to state as the Lake schools get is open to debate.

And this year they'll get no entrants if they don't play their way there.

I never give anyone heck after a tough loss. I know how it feels after brutal losses as well. Rapids has had a few of those too.

Besides, I’ve lived 25 miles from Lambeau Field for 40 years. I’ve got my hands full with gloating Packer fans. 😡

Add Hermantown to that Northern section in 21-22 & you have 7 teams (that’s adequate for number of teams in a section). It guarantees a “true” Northern team participating at AA State every year so I agree with northwoods on this one ☝️ And under this scenario, you can play the section final at Amsoil forever....although Moorhead may have something to say about that 😉🤣 Actually the equitable thing to do is alternate the Section Final between the mini Ralph & Amsoil, although WDIO might not have a tv van that can make it all the way to Thief River Falls :P
