Class A Rankings 1-21-2018

Post by HShockeywatcher »

There weren’t too many ranked teams who didn’t pick up a loss this week, which is really interesting. However, there wasn’t much moving due to head to head results. This week there’s a few games between ranked teams.

Enjoy!

1. [1] Hermantown (9-5-2) (4-0)
The Hawks likely locked up the top section seed, although the loss to STMA doesn’t look great. Two more section opponents this week.
This week: Tues vs Hibbing, Thurs vs Proctor

2. [2] Mahtomedi (12-3-1) (7-1)
The Zephyrs lost a close one to Stillwater then shut out Breck. Two conference games this week.
This week: Tues @ North St Paul, Thurs @ Simley

3. [3] Orono (10-5-1) (9-2)
The Spartans lost by 1 in Hutchinson, which is uncharacteristic of them and their first "bad loss" of the season. They have beaten two of the three teams below them so they won't drop for this one loss, but they don’t have much slack. Next week they play both Delano and Mound Westonka. They tied Holy Family at home the first time; can they win on the road?
This week: Tues @ Holy Family, Thurs @ Litchfield

4. [4] Mound Westonka (13-4-1) (10-2-1)
The White Hawks beat Litchfield and got crushed by Holy Family. This will be a big week hosting Delano. They won the first match up, winning would keep the top seed in the section in their control.
This week: Tues vs Waconia, Fri vs Delano

5. [5] Greenway (13-5) (10-3)
The Raiders won't be the top section seed after losing to Hermantown; beating Virginia this week could all but seal up the 2 seed.
This week: Tues @ Virginia, Fri vs International Falls

6. [6] Delano ( 9-8 ) (8-5)
The Tigers picked up 2 wins, including shutting out Cathedral on the road, then lost to Litchfield in OT. They are likely a top 3 seed in the section and beating Mound Westonka this week would keep the door open for the top seed, but can play down to their opponents.
This week: Tues @ Hutchinson, Fri @ Mound Westonka

7. [7] Minneapolis ( 11-8 ) (7-4)
The Novas previously lost to Holy Angels by 3 and this week lost by 1.
This week: Tues @ Chaska, Sat vs River Lakes

8. [8] East Grand Forks (10-7-1) (7-3-1)
The Green Wave pick up a couple of AA losses and shut out Hibbing. Can they beat TRF this week?
This week: Tues @ Thief River Falls, Thurs @ Grand Forks Central

9. [9] Virginia (11-7-1) (8-4-1)
The Blue Devils host Greenway this week; winning would make section seeding interesting.
This week: Tues vs Greenway, Sat vs Eveleth

10. [10] Cathedral (12-5) (10-5)
The Crusaders have lost to Hermantown, Virgina, and Delano each by 1 in 3 of their last 4 games against Class A teams and they play two Class A games this week. This week they have games they should win, but they have big games every week after until the postseason.
This week: Tues @ Little Falls, Fri vs Luverne

11. [11] Sartell-St Stephen (14-4) (13-1)
The Sabres picked up two wins this week; can they compete with Brainerd at home this week?
This week: Tues vs Brainerd, Fri vs Sauk Rapids-Rice

12. [13] Alexandria (9-7-1) (9-5-1)
The Cardinals picked up two wins last weeks; should be a tough week ahead of them.
This week: Tues @ River Lakes, Thurs vs St Cloud, Fri @ Bemidji

13. [14] Breck (4-10) (3-4)
The Mustangs ended their losing straight, then lost to two better teams. No Class A games this week; can they compete with one of WI’s best?
This week: Tues vs Hudson, Thurs @ Wayzata, Sat @ New Prague

14. [-] Thief River Falls (8-7-2) (7-4)
The Prowlers are 6-0-1 in their last 7 games; can they keep it rolling with a win over EGF?
This week: Tues vs East Grand Forks, Fri @ Denfeld, Sat @ Hibbing

15. [15] South St Paul (11-5) (7-2)
The Packers picked up two Class A wins while dropping a close conference game to Tartan. 3 games on the road this week.
This week: Tues @ Owatonna, Thurs @ St Thomas, Sat @ Hastings

Other noteworthy teams:

Monticello (13-2-1) (11-1)
The Moose have won 5 in a row.
This week: Tues vs Champlin Park, Thurs vs Little Falls

Fergus Falls (7-7-3) (6-5-3)
This week: Tues @ Willmar, Thurs vs River Lakes, Sat @ Little Falls

Providence Academy (10-5-2) (8-3-1)
This week: Thurs @ St Paul Academy, Sat vs River Falls[/list]

A win by Virginia over Greenway will have no impact on seedings. Virginia has lost to Proctor and Hibbing and have a tie with the Falls. The only scenario where the #2 seed might be questionable is if Virginia beats Hermantown and Greenway loses its other remaining section games against the Falls and Hibbing. Greenway’s resume outside the section is much
better than Virginia’s too.

Hutchinson 3, Orono 2
Mound-WT 3, LDC 2
LDC 3, Delano 2

Aren’t we approaching trend, rather than fluke status at this point given these recent results? I’m starting to wonder if 2A as a whole might be overrated. Or Class A in general is a tire fire after the top two teams.

This is the weakest Section 2 has been in a long, long time. Or maybe I should say that the parody it there as up to 5 teams could legitimately win it. Or maybe a combination of both.

Nice win for Virginia last night, but yes, Greenway still remains the #2 seed, as Virginia has too many other bad results vs lower 7A teams. But, this win should cement Virginia in at #3, setting up a likely semifinal rubber match. Hopefully Greenway will be back at full strength by then.

Virginia is still a confusing team. They'll have a great game and then follow it up with a stinker against a weaker team. When they're on, they look like they could threaten a full strength Greenway, but when they're off, they look like the #5 seed in 7A.

Were Troumbly and Lawson both missing from this game or was it just Troumbly?

Someone told me Lawson didn't play last night.

Lawson did not have a goal.
Lawson has the flu and probably shouldn’t of been playing. Was close enough to his parents to find out he was pumping fluids with a iv bag between periods.
Rajala had the goal.
They’re kids NOT PROFESSIONALS
It’s just a game!

Thanks for the correction. On the Mesabi TV broadcast, I thought the announcer said Lawson. Yeah, if kid needs IV fluids he probably shouldn't be out there.
