2015 HS Elite League
Moderators: Mitch Hawker, east hockey, karl(east)
Head boys hockey coaches at the MN high schools get a request for nominations from the league around the start of the varsity season, with a follow up email from the league in January to ask about ay additional nominations.Tripod wrote:"The 2015 elite league season selection process involved a nominating phase, begun in November 2014, which led to a beginning list of about 320 players." - How does a player get nominated? Who generally does the nominating?
Not all nominated players are put on the prospect list, but seems like coaches (who can nominate their own players, btw) at least try to be realistic in who they nominate.

The Minnesota High School Hockey off-season is very conflicting(confusing). For me, you see the same schools every every year with 6+ kids on the elite teams, and it don't matter what year. Pretty soon we will be seeing freshman on our elite teams. The way I look at it: if a player of mine gets on the elite squad, I'm excited. if a player of mine doesn't get on an elite squad, I don't concern myself with it. I love my squad. GR, Hermantown, and East can have freshman, soph, junior, and seniors and 6 plus players on the squad every year. That's great! Lots of respect for all our northern squads. I just can't wait to play these elite player dominated teams during the regular season. =) ps. is it high school hockey season yet......Wildcathcky wrote:Tough to scout players during the season if they aren't nominated until the end of the year.Tripod wrote:Seems to me a much better time frame to ask for nominations would be at the end of the year.
This was published in Let's Play Hockey, explaining the Elite League selection process. Sounds familiar, but hopefully worth posting anyway:

With the Elite league teams being Tier 1 now why didnt they integrate those teams into the regular 18u and 16u brackets for the NAHL tournament? Its rare to get teams from all over the country here and always more fun to play in a big tourney than against the same guys and teams.
Last year I thought some of the D league teams played in the 16u. Does not look like that happened this year. Hopefully next year.

The elite league will already be at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, from Sep 25-27; elite league teams play a regular weekend set of games as part of the overall event. The games are played at the same time as the NAHL has all 22 teams coming in from all over the country to play four games each. The elite league kids get significant national scouting exposure at this event, as over 300 college, junior, and pro scouts attend at least some of the Showcase each year.
Yup got it. But why not move the Elite League teams into the 18u and 16u tourneys for that event?OU812 wrote:The elite league will already be at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, from Sep 25-27; elite league teams play a regular weekend set of games as part of the overall event. I saw the Team SE v Team NW elite league game on Friday, and Chase Ellingson from Breck stole the show with a natural hat trick to turn a 4-2 Team SE lead into a 5-4 Team NW win.
Btw, the arena was just packed for the game; I've never seen so many scouts all in one rink. The five day combination of NAHL, NAPHL, and elite league games (all played in Blaine as part of the NAHL Showcase) drew over 320 NCAA, junior, and pro scouts. Nice showing by the State of Hockey and the kids.

A possibly overlooked performance in last weekends Elite League action was LVN's Taylor Schneiders hat trick, leading Team CCM to a win over Team Northwest. ( This in spite of 14 minutes in the penalty box.) Schneiders offensive capability is no surprise to many of us who saw him come on strong in 2nd half of last season.
(Many casual fans I talk to first remember all the talent that LVN graduated last year. However, Max Johnson and Ryan Poehling are towards the top of Elite League scoring this year. Enebek has logged 9 points also. Add Schneider to the mix and Panthers have 4 varsity returns with proven elite caliber point production. How many other teams in the state match that, especially now that Michael Graham has decided to stay at Fargo?

Look for Schneiders younger brother (freshman and 2nd year bantam) to play Varsity this year too. Best Bantam I have seen in at least last decade. Has what it takes to be a very special player.WestMetro wrote:A possibly overlooked performance in last weekends Elite League action was LVN's Taylor Schneiders hat trick, leading Team CCM to a win over Team Northwest. Watch for Jr Tommy Klans (played JV for LN last year) to have a breakout season too. Although very small in stature, he has elite puck skills and an uncanny hockey IQ. Would have likely been a solid 2nd/3rd line player on most AA teams in state last year. Look for him to have close to 40 pts this year.WestMetro wrote:A possibly overlooked performance in last weekends Elite League action was LVN's Taylor Schneiders hat trick, leading Team CCM to a win over Team Northwest.
