Edina Holiday Classic
This should be an interesting 3 days of hockey. All teams are in the Top 12 of LPH rankings (as of Dec 10), and all teams are in the Top 10 of Karl's rankings (as of Dec 14).
Who is going to come out of the weekend with the best record?

Elks play Andover Tuesday then three in a row, tough sledding. They rely on their top line a lot and Kiersted who are all relatively small in stature. They did get some secondary scoring from Zerban in the Blaine game which is good sign, Rapids will also have the fatigue factor on day 3. Elks have a chance to beat EP in a high scoring game, Edina physically pounded them last year in the Classic after the Elks beat them earlier, look for more of the same. I look for the Elks to finally beat Rapids but ultimately the goal is to win the big games in March.

I don't think Grand Rapids was dominated last year. Although Edina took more than 60 shots on them it took Overtime for Edina to win and Grand Rapids beat Elk River 3-2 last year.greenway1969 wrote:Edina 2-1, Eden Prairie 2-1, Elk River 2-1 and Rapids 0-3. Rapids best bet would seem to be Elk River, they somehow have had their number over the recent years. Don't think Rapids will be dominated like they were last year, but goaltending is still unsettled.
I could see the Elks going 3-0 in this one... I got to watch them a little bit last week and I was shocked how well they are playing together. Aside from goal tending I really believe they are the most high powered scoring threat in the state. I think the Jaremko kid will take a bold run at Mr. Hockey. I look for them to go 2-1 at worst possibly 3-0. However all games will be high scoring 5+ goals... Might as well look at it as a race to 6.
Definitely agree with this. He's a stud.Stars67 wrote:I could see the Elks going 3-0 in this one... I got to watch them a little bit last week and I was shocked how well they are playing together. Fun stats: At this tourney Edina has won 11 straight games and are 23-1 in their past 24 games (last loss 2-1 to Grand Rapids in 2010).
Unfortunately I can only find stats for the Classic since 2005. Anyone know when they switched to the current 4 team field? If I recall, didn't Hill-Murray used to play in it?

You'll have to take everything greenway says with a lot of salt. His passion for Grand Rapids bashing is top of the line.greenway1969 wrote:Edina 2-1, Eden Prairie 2-1, Elk River 2-1 and Rapids 0-3. Rapids took Edina to OT last year, lost to Eden Prairie and beat Elk River.
The year before they lost to Edina, tied Eden Prairie and beat Elk River.
And as stated above the last time Edina lost in this tourney was to Grand Rapids.
Thunderhawk Fanatic!!
I know in the 2000-2001 season it was Edina, Jefferson, Duluth East and Hill-Murray.PSBMedia wrote:Fun stats: At this tourney Edina has won 11 straight games and are 23-1 in their past 24 games (last loss 2-1 to Grand Rapids in 2010).

I believe the first year of the classic was the 1996-97 season at Braemar. They used to have it at the Met Center in the mid-80s. Then it turned into an 8 team tournament. Then when the North Stars left town, they moved it to the Civic Center, first year it was there was '93-'94, with Jefferson winning it. It was held at the Civic Center for another two years, but the last year, there were maybe 39 people in the stands, including family members, for the final between Minnetonka & Edina. That was the last year they did it there.
My memory isn't the greatest, but what I do remember is this:
-1997-98: Jefferson beat Edina when Dave Hergert scored on a slap shot from about the red line with about 3 seconds left to win it.
-1998-99: Hill-Murray was in the classic. I do believe they were in it in 97-98 as well, but I wouldn't wager the deed to the farm on it.

A fun holiday tradition, the Edina Classic.
In many recent years, this is where Elk River hit a wall. They always rack up a good 4-0 record [or so], opening up the season with some big wins over teams like Champlin Park & Anoka. Maybe a taste of losing early this year will impact them in a positive way. I've seen ER look great this year, and terrible. Depends if they have the puck or not... Such as their going up 4-0 vs Blaine, then letting them tie it before winning in OT. If they can toughen up mentally as the season rolls along & begin to avoid those defensive collapses, they'll come a long way. Sometimes the mental hurdles are the hardest to conquer. (DECC)
It'll be fun to watch these high powered offenses collide, and see who can come up with the most consistent defense & goal tending. What are the over/unders, gotta be at least 8 or 9, if not 10 in most of these games... Whatever it is, I'm parlaying all of the overs.
I don't know much about the 2014/15 Thunderhawks, but I know they come to scrap with the rich city boys every year. Usually pretty physical games. I love the fight in them. No matter what the rankings are, they don't care. Have to respect that. Some good 'ol boys.
Besides Jaremko, Mittlestadt is my favorite player to watch this year. Close call in goal tending between the 4 teams, but I might have to go Durocher.
Last but not least, I sure hope they fill some seats. I could be wrong, but I feel like there aren't as many people, particularly students, at these games as there should be.

Grand Rapids has lost three straight and appears to be reeling, but I don't think the sky is falling internally. They still have a very talented top line and the defense is starting to come together a bit. I find it unlikely that Grand Rapids would win all three games down in Edina, but the likelihood of them winning a game seems decent.
Scott Van Pelt always talks about "how good is your good?" I think Grand Rapids has some pretty good "good." They'll certainly compete in all three games and will probably find a way to win one of them.

ER beat Edina last year prior to the Classic, Games in Duluth are at Amsoil Arena and the mental hurdle is more to the fact that East has been better. ER has closed the talent gap the last 2 years with last year being the closest. Good call on Jaremko, hope he plays well.Bayside Tigers wrote:A fun holiday tradition, the Edina Classic.

As far as I can tell, these are the historical fields:
04-05 - present: Edina, Eden Prairie, Elk River, Grand Rapids
03-04: Edina, EP, ER, Red Wing
02-03: Edina, Hill-Murray, Hibbing, Greenway (the last two did not play each other, though). This was the last year that it was after Christmas. I'm guessing they moved it up to accommodate both tournaments, as they were losing teams to the other one.
01-02: Edina, Eden Prairie, Jefferson, White Bear
99-01: Edina, Jefferson, Hill, Duluth East
98-99: Edina, Jefferson, Hill, Moorhead
