I was at the game and left with 3 minutes left. I didn't see any glass-breaking incident. I just checked the newspaper and they didn't report anything about it. If it did happen, it happened after I left.

The first line of Marshall (Mikel-Horvath-Zerr) finally showed up at a game I watched. They played pretty well -went at it hard- and were rewarded for their efforts with the winning goal. I just don't see Marshall going far in the playoffs, maybe first or second round elimination.

The Windom frosh -Devin Nielsen- looked okay, but didn't factor into Windom's goal.

Going to see the leading goal-scorer in the state tonight: Tanner Picht of Morris/Benson has 29 so far. Will the Marshall defense leak freely?

Looks like the Marshall defense held on last night. Only gave up 2. What were the SOG on Teak?

Fortunately, there were no shots on goal ON Teak! I had zero saves on zero shots.

Marshall outshot MoBe 32-21.

Marshall played their best game of the season (of the ones I have seen). They came out ready to play and were aggressive the entire night. The Mikel-Horvath-Zerr line was again very effective in shutting down the MoBe offensive threat and picked up a couple of goals also.

I just wish some other coach would instruct the Marshall coach on how to teach the breakout from the defensive zone. He has the Marshall wingers playing too low; they need to be above the HyVee advert sign!

Sounds like a boring night Teak. You were probably getting cold not facing any shots! My bad. I guess I need to start proof reading my posts.

Sounds like the Marshall people wish some other coach would coach as well

With New Ulm Losing today to Minnehaha, It sets up a potentially enormous game for seedings on february 15th. Still a ways off, but it present one of the few chances for Luverne to Leapfrog New Ulm in the Seedings. A helluva lot can happen between now and then! Cant wait to see it play out.

Haven't we learned our lesson in this section?! Seedings are done based on head to head. Not a this team beat that team beat this team by 3 by 2 by 10.... Get real. They actually published a scenario that includes this redwood/Luverne logic at my D3 college. Based on the teams our football team beat and the teams we beat beating someone else, the chain ended at Texas AM beating Alabama. By that logic my pion D3 school is better than Bama.

Wishful thinking.

Play hockey, seedings in this section don't even matter.

What a tool!!!

Luverne/Redwood logic???? Bettman, let me bring something to your attention. Luverne lost to New Ulm by 1 goal in last year's section final, they have the best quality win(Princeton) in the section this year, and they still can't get New Ulm to play them. So until these teams can play each other head to head, how do suppose we should gauge the quality of these teams??? Enlighten us with your vast knowledge of the game.

One more thing. You like to bang on Luverne a lot. They have no coaching, they don't have a breakout, if they actually had a good coach they would be good. Blah blah blah! Your Tigers are a great example of what a team looks like with bad coaching.

Soooo, new ulm is bama, and Luverne is d3?
These are the measures that belichick on his golden throne in new ulm has forced upon the section with his arrogance. I agree it should be based head to head, but it can't be. Oh, And yes, seedings do indeed matter.

Lets get the seedings discussion going (if for nothing else just to get bettman going).

1. New Ulm, Avoiding playing the section is still working for them.
2. Luverne, Ugly loss to Marshall keeping them from #1 Spot
3. Litch
4. Marshall
5. Windom
6. Hutch
7. Redwood
8. Fairmont
9. Worthington

Hutch with two big section games left with Litch and Luverne. If they pull off either of those they could surpass Windom.
New Ulm has a big section tilt with Litch tomorrow night.
Luverne and New Ulm both have one ugly loss (Marshall and Dodge County respectively) Quality win discussion goes to Luverne with the Princeton victory.
There are a lot of games left to be played, which is good for Hutch.
Thoughts?

notTONIGHT, have to say projections spot on for right now. Some big games that could move some teams coming up. I also want to add that seeding only matters to a certain point. I think having to play in New Ulms back yard for section semi and final is more of an advantage than getting the 1 seed over 2 seed. Just a thought.

Hearing that Marshall lost two players to broken bones? Did the defenseman really break his collar bone on the broken glass incident? Can anyone confirm the injuries? If so, count out Marshall. Already having a tough transition with the new coach, and now injured players. :?:

CherryPicker99 wrote:Thanks chalk talk for the stats. I didn't realize that New Ulm had been beaten that bad at state. I understand that section 3a is the weakest section but I thought they could compete a little better than that.
In the last 15 years of class A hockey there has been only 3 public schools to win the tournament. Eveleth Gilbert, Warrroad (2), and Hermantown. The system is flawed, everyone knows it!! Once these privates figured out they didn't have to compete with the large suburban schools it was an arms race to attarct talent. Personally, i would like to see the privates in one conference and they can compete in AAA hockey like Shattuck does or they have to play AA in the MSHL.

Now as for section 3A.. Well that is completely different story. The teams are not historically known for their hockey programs. I mean Hutch is a football town, New Ulm is a baseball town, LDC has a bunch of Fins, and Marshall has the Schwans Company. Not a lot of hockey tradition there.

Most years the team that is seeded number 1 in this section or the team that makes it out of the section would probably be a 3, 4, 5 or higher seed some years in just about every other section in Class A. The talent pool is just not there. You could put a All Star team together from this section and they still wouldn't have as much talent as the top privates from year to year. That just shows how flawed the system is! It is not that this section is so bad it is that privates are that good! Take away the privates and the best public team in Class A and this Section will compete with the rest of the teams, it may not be pretty but they would compete.

I would also like to see the MSHL bring a team into this section this will enhance the level of play. A class A program that has been very competitive since the inception of the Class A/AA tournaments. A program like Orono, Delano or an Alexandria would serve this section wonders.

Best of luck to the Section winner because with the way they are seeding the teams 1-5 now. It is all but impossible to avoid the double digit, running time third period embarassment. Which is pretty sad because although i personally have never liked New Ulm you dam near gotta feel sorry for them because they are doing the right things down their with their hockey program.

There is a part of me that agrees with bettman about how foolish we have to get with the seedings conversation. However, this is what setterhole has forced us to do. It needs to be pointed out, Luverne beat St. Paul Johnson, and Johnson beat Minnehaha, who beat New Ulm.

Your right bettman, that sentence feels so stupid to type.

At this point, why do the seedings even matter? It is going to come down to Luverne and New Ulm anyway, so who cares? No one hangs a banner because of their seeding. I am fine with Luverne being number 2. It doesn't matter where we are seeded.

This section is currently a three team race. I think the drop off from litch to whoever is seed 4, is pretty drastic. Being the one seed, and playing whoever four is, in the semi's does make a difference than playing litch who has been very stingy all year. IMO

Luverne just gave away their chance for the number one seed with a loss to Morris/Benson. New Ulm once again locks up the number one seed. Please anyone but New Ulm win this section. Please!
