Class A Rankings Week #11 (2/5/2023)

Playoffs are just around the corner and the Top 8 teams have started to solidify their spots and teams 9-25 continue to make slow movements both up and down but have shown they are the group of teams deserving to be ranked. This is the best I have felt about the rankings and order in a long time as the resume of 11 weeks results have really started to bring clarity to the overall picture of Class A.

1- Warroad (8A) (21-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 5-3 Bemidji, W 5-0 Thief River Falls, W 4-0 Grand Forks Central
Upcoming Schedule: 2/6 @ #5 East Grand Forks, 2/7 vs #5 East Grand Forks, 2/9 @ Bemidji
The Warriors were able to win their senior night in a close game with Bemidji as they were never able to fully pull away but a good win for them to start the week nonetheless. They then had a tight contest with Thief River Falls for two periods but eventually broke the game wide open with a big 4 goal third period to win convincingly. They wrapped up the week by taking care of Grand Forks Central, who beat EGF 2 days earlier, to stay unbeaten on the year. This week the games we have been waiting for a back to back home and home with East Grand Forks with the #1 seed in 8A and a perfect season on the line.

2- Hermantown (7A) (18-2-1)
Past Week Results: W 2-1 #3 Orono, W 6-1 Cloquet, W 7-0 Totino Grace
Upcoming Schedule: 2/7 vs #10 Rock Ridge, 2/10 vs Benilde St Margrets, 2/11 vs Chaska
The Hawks started their week by going into Orono and controlling the pace of play and dictating the action vs the Spartans. However, despite putting up 50 plus shots they had to hang on to win a 2-1 road game and wrap up the #2 seed in the Class A State Tournament. The Hawks followed up the win by rolling over soon to be Class A Cloquet then AA Totino Grace to finish their week on a strong note. This team is getting better and better as the winter rolls along a big one this week with 7A Rock Ridge followed up by more games vs AA opponents.

3- Orono (2A) (18-3-0)
Past Week Results: W 3-2 OT St Louis Park, L 1-2 #2 Hermantown, W 3-0 St. Louis Park
Upcoming Schedule: 2/7 vs Benilde St Margrets, 2/11 vs Chanhassen
The Spartans got a home overtime win a game vs AA St Louis Park to start their week. Orono then welcomed to town the defending Class A Champions when Hermantown visited. Brock Peyton was the star in net, holding Orono in the game and showing despite the loss that this could be a scary opponent for the Top 2 seeds at State if they make it that far. The Spartans finished the week by sweeping St Louis Park and now Orono will face its toughest week yet as they take on two highly ranked AA teams at home this coming week. With only 3 losses on the year to the #1 and #2 teams in Class A and a Top 5 AA team, and having the biggest X factor of teams not named Warroad or Hermantown in Brock Peyton in the net, it's time to slide them up to three in the rankings.

4- Mahtomedi (4A) (12-8-0)
Past Week Results: L 1-2 OT Hill Murray, L 1-3 St Thomas Academy, W 10-1 Simley
Upcoming Schedule: 2/7 @ Two Rivers, 2/9 @ Hastings, 2/11 @ Breck
The Zephyrs week started in heartbreaking fashion as they were swept by Hill Murray when they dropped the Monday Matinee game by losing with a mere 5 seconds left in overtime. The Zephyrs then dropped their 4th game in a row when they lost the rematch to St Thomas Academy. They did finish the week beating up on 4A Simley and looking at their remaining schedule Mahtomedi should win out and have a good argument for the 3 seed at State but for now going to place them at 4 and see how the final two weeks play out between them and the Spartans of Orono.

5- East Grand Forks (8A) (12-8-0)
Past Week Results: L 3-5 Moorhead, L 1-2 Grand Forks Central
Upcoming Schedule: 2/6 vs #1 Warroad, 2/7 @ #1 Warroad, 2/11 vs #14 St Cloud Cathedral
The Greenwave saw their win streak snapped by the 8AA Spuds in a back and forth entertaining game where East Grand Forks dug themselves too big of a hole in the 2nd period and eventually fell to a good hockey team. They followed up the tough loss to the Spuds with another tough loss to Grand Forks Central. Suddenly the not so red hot anymore East Grand Forks prepares for an odd but intriguing Monday and Tuesday home and home series with Warroad with the #1 seed in Section 8A on the line.

6- Northfield (1A) (16-5-0)
Past Week Results: L 4-6 Rochester John Marshall, W 5-0 Owatonna
Upcoming Schedule: 2/9 @ Rochester Century, 2/11 vs Mankato East
The Raiders got upset to start their week when they dropped a game to a hot Rochester John Marshall. The game does raise some red flags and show they are not a sure favorite to come out of 1A as many have thought all year. To Northfield’s credit they did rebound and took care of AA Owatonna to end the week and not let the loss linger. This week they have two good tests when they hit the road vs Rochester Century and then return home to take on Mankato East in Big Nine Conference action.

7- Delano (2A) (12-9-0)
Past Week Results: W 5-1 Hutchinson, L 4-10 Holy Family, W 3-2 #16 Minneapolis
Upcoming Schedule: 2/7 vs #15 Providence Academy, 2/9 vs Southwest Christian
Delano got the week started right when they picked up the season series sweep of Section 2A Hutchinson. However, the Tigers were swept by Holy Family on the year in the middle of their week as the Fire continued the long traditions of dominance over Delano in hockey. The Tigers did recover to pick up the critical Section 2A win over Minneapolis to finish the week. Now Delano has their last two Section 2A games this week with big match ups with Providence Academy and Southwest Christian if they take care of business and win both they will be a lock for the two seed come playoffs.

8- Hibbing (7A) (15-6-1)
Past Week Results: W 8-2 International Falls, W 8-0 North Shore
Upcoming Schedule: 2/7 @ Northern Lakes
Hibbing did what they needed to do this week as they went on the road and swept a pair of Section 7A teams. In both games they were able to pull away from inferior section teams and suddenly this team is riding a nice 3 game win streak entering the final weeks of the season. This week just one game but it is one they should cruise in when they stay on the road and head to 6A Northern Lakes.

9- Detroit Lakes (8A) (14-5-1)
Past Week Results: W 14-1 Breckenridge/Wahpeton, L 3-4 Brainerd
Upcoming Schedule: 2/6 @ Wadena Deer Creek, 2/7 vs Park Rapids, 2/9 @ #13 Little Falls
The Lakers absolutely routed the BW Blades to start their week in an ugly game score wise. However, their win streak was snapped when they dropped a Saturday afternoon game in Brainerd to finish the week. Detroit Lakes continues to be a puzzle to rank. They lack the quality wins of the rest of the Top 10 in Class A but don't have any eye sore bad losses either like teams 11-20. Another week that has two winnable Mid-State Conference games before a good clash with Top 15 Little Falls to end the week.

10- Rock Ridge (7A) (12-7-1)
Past Week Results: L 3-4 Brainerd, L 0-1 Sartell
Upcoming Schedule: 2/7 @ #2 Hermantown, 2/10 vs Proctor, 2/11 @ Pine City
The Wolverines had a tough weekend road trip vs two CLC 8AA teams in which they played well in both games. They dropped the opener of their weekend trip to Brianerd despite leading 2-0 in the game and they just missed the game tying goal at the buzzer in a loss. They then battled a good Sartell team that has beaten everyone else below the Top 10 in Class A they have played. The Wolverines came up just short giving up the only goal of the game in the third period of a very even game. While the sweep doesn't hurt them in the rankings they do continue the tough schedule this week as they have an important game vs Hermantown this week to see how they match up with the 7A kings.

11- Duluth Denfeld (7A) (12-10-1)
Past Week Results: W 6-0 Greenway, W 5-4 #20 Alexandria
Upcoming Schedule: 2/9 @ Duluth Marshall
The Hunters were able to snap a nasty 5 game losing streak with an impressive week as they started it by taking down 7A Greenway to start the week. They then picked up one of their more impressive wins of the year when they hit the road and traveled across the state and beat what had been a red hot Alexandria team on the road. The win really solidified their spot in the Top 15 of Class A and this week they have a winnable game vs AA private Duluth Marshall which they should do well in.

12- Fergus Falls (6A) (12-7-1)
Past Week Results: W 4-0 Willmar, W 8-0 Willmar, W 7-3 Wadena Deer Creek
Upcoming Schedule: 2/7 at River Lakes, 2/9 vs #20 Alexandria
The Otters have suddenly won 4 games in a row and they started their week off on a good note as they were able to sweep 6A Willmar in back to back games to build some positive momentum within the late season push. The Otters then got an early scare from Wadena Deer Creek failing behind early but to their credit they clawed their way out of the deficit and won a very important 6A game. Now this week they have another winnable game vs River Lakes to try to have all the momentum possible when they host Alexandria at the end of the week for the #1 seed in 6A.

13- Little Falls (5A) (13-8-1)
Past Week Results: L 2-3 OT #20 Alexandria, W 4-3 #14 St Cloud Cloud Cathedral, W 6-4 Northern Lakes
Upcoming Schedule: 2/7 @ #14 St Cloud Cloud Cathedral, 2/9 vs #9 Detroit Lakes, 2/11 vs Sauk Rapids
The Flyers dropped another home game to start their week when they lost to a suddenly red hot Alexandria team in overtime. However, the Flyers responded at the end of their week as they first knocked off St Cloud Cathedral scoring three unanswered goals to lock up the #1 seed in 5A and then took down Northern Lakes to finish the week. This week is full of more challenges highlighted by the rematch with Cathedral and show down with Detroit Lakes, a team that sits ahead of them in the rankings.

14- St Cloud Cathedral (5A) (12-9-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-3 Totino Grace, L 3-4 #13 Little Falls, W 8-5 #15 Providence Academy
Upcoming Schedule: 2/7 vs #13 Little Falls, 2/11 @ #5 East Grand Forks
The Crusaders were said to be battling illness and it showed as they had a rough week coughing up a two goal lead to Totino Grace and losing the game in the process as well to start the week. The coughing up the lead trend continued when they lost another two goal lead against Section 6A opponent Little Falls and lost any hope of the #1 seed in 5A in the process. They did beat Providence Academy to at least finish the week with a win but they played a style that will not suit them well for playoffs giving up multiple goals and had numerous breakdowns. This week an important rematch with Little Falls while they can't get the 1 seed they need to win to stay out of the 4 seed.

15- Providence Academy (2A) (12-9-0)
Past Week Results: W 5-2 Breck, W 5-1 St. Paul Academy, L 5-8 #14 St Cloud Cathedral
Upcoming Schedule: 2/7 @ #7 Delano, 2/11 @ Rochester Lourdes
The Lions looked in big trouble when they fell behind 2-0 on the road early to Section 2A Breck but they were able to weather the storm and come back with 5 unanswered goals to pick up the Section sweep. The Lions then took down St Paul Academy and picked up their first conference championship in school history. However, the defensive woes showed up at the end of the week as they crashed and burned and a run and gun score fest with St Cloud Cathedral. They can outscore the mid tier Class A team but they struggle vs anyone in the Top 15 due to lack of defense. Crucial game with Delano this week for Section 2A seeding purposes.

16- Minneapolis (2A) (11-7-2)
Past Week Results: W 8-1 St Paul Highland Park, L 2-3 #7 Delano
Upcoming Schedule: 2/7 @ Armstrong/Cooper, 2/9 vs Holy Angels, 2/11 vs Bloomington Kennedy
The boys from the 612 routed the Scots at the beginning week to pick up the season series sweep on the season. Minneapolis then went to Delano to end the week and fell behind 3-0 but after that they really had the better of the play as the game wore on. They got it to a one goal game but were unable to get an equalizer and lost a game where they looked like the better team for stretches. This week they are busy as they take on two AA opponents before an important Section 2A game with Bloomington Kennedy.

17- New Prague (1A) (11-7-1)
Past Week Results: L 1-9 Chanhassen, W 4-1 Bloomington Jefferson
Upcoming Schedule: 2/7 vs Minnesota River, 2/9 @ Rochester Mayo, 2/11 @ Waconia
The Trojans started off the week playing highly ranked AA Chanhassen tough for one period but it was all Storm after that and Trojans were soundly defeated. New Prague did finish the week by making up for their worst loss of the season when they beat Bloomington Jefferson in the rematch. The Trojans will host Minnesota River in a game they should do well in before some more challenges with AA Rochester Mayo and conference opponent Waconia at the end of the week.

18- New Ulm (3A) (19-2-1)
Past Week Results: W 5-3 Rochester Lourdes, W 3-2 Windom, W 6-1 Mound Westonka
Upcoming Schedule: 2/7 vs Litchfield Dassel Cokato, 2/9 @ Waseca
The Eagles just keep finding ways to win as they won three more hockey games this week. They were able to get outside of the Big South Conference at the beginning and end of the week and pick up some non section and conference wins. This week they have their best test since back during Christmas time when they take on a decent Litchfield Dassel Cokato team at home to start their week which should give us a better picture of where this team fits in the Class A rankings.

19- Chisago Lakes (4A) (12-6-1)
Past Week Results: W 5-4 Dodge County, W 2-1 Two Rivers, W 5-4 Pine City OT
Upcoming Schedule: 2/7 @ Cambridge Isanti, 2/9 vs Northern Edge 2/11 @ Princeton
Welcome back to the Top 20 Chisago Lakes after a dreadful (0-4-1) start Chisago Lakes has gone (12-2-0) in their last 14 games. The impressive streak includes wins over Alexandria and a big Section 4A win over Two Rivers to lock up the #2 seed in the section. The Wildcats will play three more Mississippi 8 Conference games they should be favored to win this week as they look to stay hot heading into playoffs.

20- Alexandria (6A) (8-11-1)
Past Week Results: W 3-2 OT #13 Little Falls, L 4-5 #11 Duluth Denfeld
Upcoming Schedule: 2/7 @ St. Cloud, 2/9 @ #12 Fergus Falls
Alexandria is (7-2-1) in their last ten games and had a solid week as they picked up a nice road win over Little Falls in overtime in the rematch to make up for the thrashing the Flyers gave them earlier in the year. They then dropped the finale of the week when they dug themselves a giant three goal hole early and while they nearly came back they came up just short. Huge game with Fergus Falls this week as if they get a sweep they will secure the #1 seed in 6A.

The Next 5 in Class A Week #11-
Thief River Falls (8A) (9-11-1)-
The Prowlers lost a tough game to Warroad in their only action this week. They hung around for 2 periods but were blown away in the third period when the Warriors opened up the game with a 4 goal outburst and Thief River Falls fell further below .500. Things won't be any easier this week with Roseau coming to town and then a must win vs Red Lake Falls to hold on to a top 4 seed in Section 8A.

Monticello (5A) (13-7-1)- The Moose won their only game of the week when the shutout Pine City for another Section 5A win. Monticello looks to wrap up the Mississippi 8 Conference title this week when they face 5A Princeton for a 2nd time on the year. A win over the Tigers would also lock them into a top 3 seed in Section 5A. The Moose will get to face red hot and now ranked AA Buffalo in their other game to get them playoff ready.

Two Rivers (4A) (15-5-1)- The Warriors dropped a very important 4A game to Chisago Lakes and moved down to the #3 seed in the process. While they move out of the Top 20 they are still having a nice year and should still be in the thick of it in Section 4A. They face 4A top seeded Mahtomeid before having a must win 4A game vs. Simley to end the week.

Luverne (3A) (14-6-1)- The Cardinals continue to have a nice year and rattled off three more wins this week and are an impressive (10-3-0) since the start of 2023. They have wins over Albert Lea and Dodge County during that stretch and look like the #2 or #3 seed in Section 3A. This week three more Section 3A games that they need to win to stay on track for top three seed in 3A.

Albert Lea (1A) (15-5-1)- Albert Lea won two more games this week and then tied Mankato West which wasn’t a great way to end the week. The wins over Austin and Winona at the beginning of the week were helpful for their hopes to get the #2 seed in 1A. The Tigers have more 1A games this week they should breeze through when they face two struggling teams in Red Wing and a rematch with Austin.

Best part of this ranking Ranking is that the #20 team beat the #9 8-5 3 days ago and the #19 team beat the #9 team by 6 goals a few weeks ago... Putting a lot of stock into a win over team that is ranked #15.....

#19 hammered both #8 and #9 this year when they played...

I do love the 8A bias though TRF in the Top 10 is some serious Northern Love considering they lost head to head to the #13, #16 and Other (Fergus) head to head I guess those were all just off nights haha
