Re: Pre season scrimmages first weekend
I assume these are essentially "final tryouts to make varsity" for each of the participating teams?

Re: Pre season scrimmages first weekend
I’d love to hear some thoughts and impressions from the first couple of days of scrimmages!
A few general impressions watching some of the PIC scrimmages (Blake, BSM, Edina, Farmington, Holy Family, Wayzata): There was some sloppy hockey, but also some really impressive talent. Farmington was a little out of place (although their top kids competed hard and effectively), but the other 5 all looked like legitimate top 10 teams - so, if true, 5 of the top 10 teams competing. Scores probably weren’t the best way to evaluate because the format had every penalty resulting in penalty shots, which skewed things, teams were taking different approaches to playing time and line combinations (some looked like they treated these more like games, and some rolled 4 jumbled lines), and the schedule was staggered (some teams first game was the last for opponents), but in terms of wins/losses, Edina and Wayzata were 3-0, Blake was 2-1, BSM was 1-2, and Farmington and HF were 0-3. A few kids were missing for soccer. Of those teams, Wayzata looked a bit better than I expected - top end was good and a lot of solid worker bees. Edina’s offense is not what it was, but they will always be tough. BSM misses their three strong D from last year and has to find a goaltender able to seize the reigns, HF looked a bit out of sorts but has a lot of talent, Blake rolled 4 lines and had some nice scoring contributions from D, but their top end forwards were impressive, and Farmington could be better than they looked - their top line was tough, physical but shared the ice more than they will in season. All in all, a fun first day of hockey.
Thoughts from Duluth? Fogerty? Others?

Re: Pre season scrimmages first weekend
Tough to take much out of the games at Parade...
Mpls beat CDH 2-0 but most of the play was in the Raiders offensive zone. Mpls goaltender was fantastic and Midtbo had both goals on really nice individual plays. Top group for Mpls was solid.
Mpls and Brainerd tied 2-2
Albert Lea was a little out of place, really couldn't compete with the other 3 teams
CDH beat Brainerd 3-2. Brainerd was balanced and competed, some talented and aggressive skaters.
CDH out of sorts most of the day. 9 Seniors on the squad yesterday, only 2 juniors and the rest making their varsity debut. Rolled 4 lines and 5 D all day. Lots of talent in the 9th grade class, blue line will be good with 4 seniors, Fritz is a top goaltender. Gotta figure out how to work together up front.
5 stars to the CDH parents for their season opening tailgating performance. Tents, grills, music....perfect day!
