End of an Era?

Post by PhunnsieMcHockeyDad »

Word on the street is the St. Paul United Co-op is breaking up. SPA girls heading across the river to skate with the Minnehaha Academy-based team. Not sure where the Visitation girls will skate.

I think the breakdown was about 50/50 (don't quote me). There were only 8 girls returning next season, not sure what the 9th grade numbers would be in the Fall.

Maybe the Visitation skaters could join up with South St. Paul? The Packers have one of the leanest rosters I've seen in girls' hockey.

In any event, they've probably got 18 months to figure this out. If COVID-19 returns in the fall and there's no vaccine, there's not going to be a 2020-21 season.

That would be an interesting pairing - two pretty good rivals (SSP and United). SSP may not have numbers, but they have some real talent and one of the best coaches in the business. Hope we get to see the kids on the ice this season!

As of a year or two ago there was 1 or 2 SPU and the rest were Vis...at least on the varsity squad. There was a fair amount of unhappiness with player and that they were generally forced to play at the "Historic Drake Arena". I absolutely enjoyed hearing a real organ player at a game or two I attended over the years.

I believe that I heard the Minnehaha co-op had players from MA, Providence, Gentry, and others. Now add SPU to the mix...not many players I would guess.

I miss hockey. Bad. So happy that we were able to get the Girls & Boys tourneys done before all of this stuff. My kid misses skating a ton. I miss watching her and really anyone playing it!
