Spring HP Rosters - By the numbers (and schools)

Post by Lace'emUp »

Curious where all the HP players are coming from this spring? See the table below. Per the rosters posted at MNH, I did a quick sort based upon the school or association each player listed for themselves on the roster. For the totals, in some cases I combined the two schools together where they co-op at the HS level (ex: Champlin Park and Coon Rapids). In other cases, I left the association co-op stand alone from the schools that do not co-op at the HS level (ex: Osseo, Maple Grove, and OMG).

No surprise with Minnetonka leading the way. I was very surprised to see who was #2 overall - good for Moorhead! Also surprising to see Blake with only 3 players at the opposite end.

Could you pull the numbers from the Final 54 per school. That would be a much more interesting list. Almost anyone can sign up and pay the money for the first round.

Yes, I'd love to see the final 54. That tells us a much larger picture at the 16/17 level. Thanks!

Here's the Final 54 data. Minnetonka is still ridiculous with 16 players. To think that a couple of them might not get much playing time at varsity is even more ridiculous. A couple of the Tonka players are listed as playing Elite League last fall, but came in from California? Can someone confirm if this is correct?

You're Welcome! I little bit of a disclaimer regarding the Final 54's. Last year, and probably due to covid, there were Twenty (20) 2004's (HP-17 in 2021) and Nine (9) 2005's (HP-16 in 2021) who made USA Hockey U16/17 or U18 camps, but did NOT do the MN spring festival or Final 54's. 13 of them were from Shattuck, but nevertheless, there are players who might have already received notice from USA Hockey that they do not need to do any spring HP festivals.

This year, I think that number will be less, but I'm seeing several who made USA Hockey U16/17 or U18 camps last year, who are NOT doing the Final 54's this year: Glaser (05), Kim (05), Lalonde (05), Petrie (06), Scanne (06), Sonntag (05) - all with Shattuck. All other players who are with MSHSL teams AND who made the USA Hockey U16/17 or U18 camps last year are doing the Final 54's this year (22 05's and one from 06). Why are only the Shattuck players missing? I have no idea beyond the reasons I stated above (they have already been given notice from USA hockey).

There are occasionally some who are injured (like Maddie Kaiser last year) or who have a good hockey excuse (like the kids on Vegas last year who missed HP because of nattys) who are given an opportunity for evaluation in some other way, but I’m pretty sure the SSM kids you mentioned didn’t participate in Minnesota HP because they aren’t Minnesota residents.

That would make sense regarding the Shattuck player "home state", injuries, or also the Nationals. Thanks for pointing that out.

Just a general question that I am hoping someone on the board can answer. As I was looking at the above list, it appears that Minnetonka had 18 players that were U16 or U17. How does 1 team get basically their entire team (missing 1 and the backup goalie)? It seems hard to believe that there were not other kids that were qualified, but were not selected. That basically means the 4th line on their team and 3rd defensive pair were selected, unless I missed something

More importantly, how does that 4th line actually get any playing time in the regular season? I do not understand the girls selection process, but just seems odd. Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks!

Based on the state tournament and section game I saw, tonka does not dress a 4th line. Not sure that helps answer your question. But they did get 2nd in state and had 7 freshman in their line up.

5 players from Minnetonka HS.
.... and zero players from Shattuck. Looking at the all-time roster on USA Hockey U18 page, the last time Shattuck was shutout from U18's was 2010. Here's their participation over the years:
2023 - 0
2022 - 2
2020 - 3
2019 - 6
2018 - 6
2017 - 5
2016 - 4

2014 - 5
2013 - 2
2012 - 2
2011 - 2
2010 - 0
2009 - 2
2008 - 3
Side Note: Unless someone on the posted 05/06 list is from Edina, Edina has also been shutout for the first time since 2013 (either as a hometown or school).

Maybe I’m misunderstanding the exact nature of your post, but there are two Shattuck girls on the U18 U.S. team that will play Canada.

The newest list Eagles93 posted shows no Shattuck players. The previous lists did show Shattuck players. I must be missing something....

OK, I see it now. Looking back at all the previous lists all posted by Iceburg and Eagles93, they had both MN and non-MN players (Shattuck) listed. The very last list says (Minnesotans), I missed that part. Thus, I thought no Shattuck players made it. My apologies.

It's an achievement to be selected to a US team so no slight intended to any of the Minnesota kids playing, but it's disheartening to see how bad this US team looks compared to Canada, and particularly given all of the Canadian kids lost a full year of hockey when they shut down for COVID. I think it's been clear for a few years this '05/'06 group for the US is not very deep, but there is a huge talent gap between these two teams. Tough week for USA hockey. Probably premature to push the panic button because of two days in August, but I wonder if the roster announced for this series will be the same as the one they field in Sweden?

Even in the best years there is usually a change or two between the three game series and the World Championships. I bet we see closer to five changes.

I watched and was stunned at how poor they looked. Obviously they are playing a very good opponent, but even just the number of unforced errors were shocking and moments where you're left wondering what in the world they were doing positionally.
