Russialove - You make no sense. Mnjh is a joke, lets be realistic about that. I understand the before and after for some kids in rural areas that dont want to drive for elite d. However, to give up the whole season to play Mnjh is ridiculous.

If you cant make USHL or USNDT you are merely chasing a dream as a senior. The dream will come a reality with or without the NAHL, AAA, MNJH, etc. This is for players that dont already have an offer.

Ask anyone that truly knows the game of hockey; former player, current or former coach, etc. Your son will get noticed if they are good enough. If they are not than there is no real fast track to making them good enough. Also, if they arent good enough then thats okay. Right? You will still love them the same. Right? Thats all that truly matters. Not what AAA team your squirt made or what select tournament your peewee made.

Russialove was only talking about before/after for MNJHL v. Elite D. As for one over the other, when it comes strictly to the quality of practices and games, players who know both levels say doing before with MNJHL is clearly more challenging because of substantially more ice time, along with teammates and rivals being older, bigger, faster and more experienced.

Tiger, and you can fix world problems with what happens in your household, right? LOTS of different circunstances for LOTS of different families.

Yes, but we are simply talking about transfering for solely the reason of playing hockey. I still dont think that's warranted under any circumstance.

Unfortunately, the transfer rules were brought forth to stop 6'10" kids from open enrolling into Hopkins High school. All kids must live under it and it ends more hockey playing careers than saves by restricting movement of kids that just want to play the game.
No, the transfer rule was implemented to prevent players and parents from using MN high schools as personal training programs to advance their own selfish interests.

Despite all the passion, and, sadly, the psychosis that frequently surrounds it, hockey is just one of many extracurricular activities offered by schools as enhancements to the educational experience. Failure to understand this simple reality brings much woe to many.

If you exclude illicit chemicals, bad grades, and injuries, the only thing that can "end more playing careers" is a player's decision to quit. No player truly possessing the talent or will to play at the next level was was ever sabotaged by playing on a poor team. Though this seems to be the default excuse used by so many. (Note: Past and present NHL'ers David Backes , Erik Rasmussen, Kurt Sauer, and Brett Hedican are alums of consistently mediocre HS programs.)

I do think that every year MN High School hockey loses several players that see NAHL or USHL as a better option than playing in a dead-end program that won't provide them the exposure or skill level to improve (I think South St. Paul had three of them last year alone). Would MN Hockey be better served having those kids transfer and stay in high school, or let them go?
I'm confused. If, last year, SSP had three players capable of early exit to the next level, why the h*** wasn't SSP unbeatable? Are you telling me that these three exceptional players took a look around the locker room, decided they weren't talent enough, and fled this dead-end program? Cripe on a cracker!! Three bona fide "next level" players would get a team very deep into section play--and probably to state.

Players jump from good programs as frequently as they jump from bad programs.

So Clipper - are you OK with...

The top debate student leaving his poor debate team for a team with the top coach/teacher in the state and excellent connections for college opportunities? His team is weakened while the new team is strengthened.

Or the gifted musician, let's say a harpist, leaving her school's crappy orchestra program for one of the state's best orchestra programs....leaving the former without a harpist and knocking the current harpist out of orchestra because they can only have one? Is this OK?

Or the aspiring engineering student who comes to a school for the extracurricular engineering program that competes in a national contest and has the best 'coach'/teacher in the state. But when that coach leaves/fired/layed off and the extracurricular program falls into disarray is it OK for that kid to transfer to another school that will have a good chance of competing at the national contest?

Or the actor/actress that chooses to leave a school because the drama director has no experience and is doing it for an extra paycheck - where if they were at another school they will get to act in three high quality, well directed performances over the school year. Is that OK for them to transfer?

Sports should be no different than arts, debate, acting, academics. We have magnet schools for just about everything but sports. In Sweden, they have magnet schools for hockey and virtually all other sports - as well as for arts, humanities, etc. I do not have a problem with that system and think more kids would stick around and play high school hockey under a similar system.

In the end, kids are not (or shouldn't be) property of a school district. Families, for whatever reasons, should make the decisions they want to make. Kids should not be punished for those decisions.

To tell you the truth I have never really thought of it that way, if they are imposing these sanctions on sports, why not impose them on the arts too? It seems to me that the high school league is picking and choosing, which is not wise.

Yes. Exactly. How would you like to be the current harpist knocked out of a job by a revolving door policy that admits new participants on a whim? Where's the displaced cellist's award for years of participation? If you're so concerned with student opportunities to flourish, wouldn't your argument be strengthened if both cellists had a gig? Are you proposing a system where only the elite are left standing? Why, too, should nontaxpaying residents be able to shop their kid around to schools they don't financially support?
Sports should be no different than arts, debate, acting, academics
They aren't any different. A quick check of the MSHSL site shows you that all competitive activities are governed by the transfer rule. Some activities included here are debate, one act plays, and speech. I think the State Of MN is quite fair here, don't you?
We have magnet schools for just about everything but sports. In Sweden, they have magnet schools for hockey and virtually all other sports - as well as for arts, humanities, etc. I do not have a problem with that system and think more kids would stick around and play high school hockey under a similar system.
We have 'em here, too. Shattuck, STA, BSM, Blake, and your beloved Breck are all waiting for you with open arms. All ya' gotta do is pay the tuition and try out. Then you might/might not make the team, and might/might not get good exposure. The transfer rule does not, I repeat does not stop you from doing this. It merely makes you carefully consider all sides of such a move. Also, explain to me and all the other taxpayers who'd have to fund them, the many tangible benefits of public sports magnet schools? Why, I bet we'd be rolling in money in no time! Heck who needs casinos?
In the end, kids are not (or shouldn't be) property of a school district. Families, for whatever reasons, should make the decisions they want to make. Kids should not be punished for those decisions.
You're right, families are free to make choices and decisions. And like all mature people they should understand all sides/terms/conditions/ and consequences of their decisions. If you don't like the rules, you don't have to play the game. What you're proposing is unfettered freedom to develop very personal extracurricular pursuits on the back and dime of whatever school momentarily holds your interest. What's worse is you're doing it under the disingenuous guise of promoting individual achievement.

JACKSRAW ,

I thought your Son Eric tried out for the Austin Bruins NAHL to stay closer to home? Is going to the Fairbanks Ice Dogs his backup plan?

You could add Junior Goalie - Andrew Sprang - who left Shattuck Midget AA to go to Colorado Rampage U18 team with Zach Hartley. Sprang is originally from Rosemount.

Or are you not counting shattuck players...?

JACKSTRAW ,

Thanks for stopping over to the house tonight and answering my questions about your Son Eric. Next time just answer them on this forum so you can save gas and leave the wife and younger kid at home.

Also , next time you stop to fill up your truck with gas make sure you take the nozzle out before you drive off.

Eric Brenk is only recorded as playing one game for Sioux Falls. Any insights?
