Personally I think Benilde will be able to compete with most AA teams, but not be able to beat up on them like they did with some of the smaller A schools. It will be interesting.

As far as the NW Suburbs go, I don't know who ER has "taken" from Anoka yet, so I can't make any calls. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)">
Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

dumpandchase. jefferson should be favored to win section. they need roberts and addyman to step it up. ep appears at first blush to be soft on d...so they are considering having 1 or 2 bantam A players foregoing their 2nd year of bantams to tryout for varsity. this appears to be a play for the future in my opinion. holy angels may also be weak on defense...but, trebil will lure (bylaw 308 notwithstanding) over some nice transfers. just hang out during his summer camp and see who shows up.

NP, I agree with you on the Jags, especially if Big Nick J. comes back from Benilde. By the way i believe Holy Angles is in section 5.

Top 5 For Sure

NP,
Now there's a program that uses open enrollment to their advantage. The Stars should be perennial top 5 material as they know how to attract players.

Rankings

Post by Hillfan »

I'm going with carpernter guy on the rankings except for one thing. Centennial. Anyone know how they will be? I know they should be fast like always, but losing the top seniors that they did doesn't help. Also how's the goaltending going to look for them? I'd have put Centennial around the 7-8 spot for now....

Was it next years' seniors or juniors that won the bantam A state championship a few years back?

Bantams

Moorhead's bantam team 2 years ago won both tournaments. So it must be this years seniors for Centennial.

The seniors coming in lost to WBL in the state title game as bantams. A week later they beat WBL for the
VFW title. The incoming sophomores just took second in state as well.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Centennial won the 2001 Bantam state tourny, so the 8th graders on that team were seniors this year. WBL beat Centennial in 2003, those are the kids that will be Jr's and Sr's next year.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... dChase1 at: 5/24/05 10:08 pm

Performance in Bantams vs Rankings

Post by RochHockeyDad »

Does it really matter what you did in Bantams two or three years ago? OK that might mean you will have a top ten team as long as you didn't lose some key players or the key players haven't kept up their intensity and dedication.

OK, it's helpful to know but won't guarantee a top five season.

It would be interesting to see how many kids off of the top Bantam A teams actually play for their H.S. team, and how well those teams do.

rochhockey. on whole your correct, however, in his hey day sats, of bloomington, was very much concerned with how his bantam A team played. those boys, in his grand plan, would be integral to his future high school team. i'll always support a team that came up the ranks together...mites to high school varsity... first and foremost. northern team, southern or metro, max nix.

dumpandchase, your querry regarding which players are are on the high school team this fall as seniors from their bantam a team could be another post. it would be very interesting to to explore that! lucia and miller played hard on the trojan bantam a team and contributed to their success. they did not win it all...but, had a top 5 rating then.

Blake Wheeler DID play on the Wayzata A Bantam team that won the state championship in 2002 as did Lucia, Miller and Wehrs. As we all know, Wheeler went on to play for Breck and then the USHL and rumor has it that Lucia, Miller and Wehrs will not be playing their senior season with the high school team. The loss of any of these players will definitely impacts Wayzata's competitive strength.

Someone asked about BSM next year. They lost a lot in seniors Tranvick, Bigham, McCarthy and Lappen. They still have an exceptional defenseman in Jaskowiak. There has been some rumor that Nick is transferring but I can't confirm that. Guggenburger established himself as a top tier goaltender last year. They also have some great young players coming in like T. McCarthy and Appelof. I would guess that they will be very competitive in their conference (a terrible one) and maybe a top 3 or 4 team in 6AA. As with any private school, you never know who is going to show up over the summer. A few key players come in and they are #1 or 2 in 6AA. Another question mark at BSM is the coaching staff. With Pauly and Blaterwick there for so many years, they consistantly put a great team on the ice. With both of those coaches gone, it's hard to know what the product is going to be.

I'm pretty confident that Jaskowiak is staying at Benilde. Yes Jefferson would love to have him back.

Benilde will fair well in Section 6. Take a look at their schedule last year, they played a number of solid AA teams and did very well. They should be an improved team over last year.

NPGandyDancer - you are correct, on paper, EP looks a little soft at D and they lost Dodds. I do however, think that the D will be as good if not better then last years team - more consistent with more size. Yes, they lost 2 studs from D, but those two really didn't contribute like they should have. I have not heard of any Bantam A's in the plans. They have Soderberg who has size and will make an impact in 2 years. In the past, Smith has not been in favor of taking kids with Bantam eligibility.

Don't forget about Chaska. Next years seniors are the group that knocked off Edina, Jefferson, and Eden Prairie in the Bantam A District 6 playoffs. They also have a couple great sophomores from this years team.

jls81. "they" aka trebil does, indeed, know how to attract players and he knows how to correctly lobby the aha administration into siding with his transfer recommendations. what he can't predict is the unruly hockey dad from banging down his door at work and laying into him for cutting his kid in favor of the bluechipper.

hey puck63. have to agree with your call on chaska being in the mix next year. their excellent coaching staff has been "priming the pump" too long now. something has to erupt...the senior class may be it. although the crosstown (crossborder) rival between chaska and ep is not as intense as kennedy v jefferson the hawks will come to play.

regarding the ep defense, i suspect you are referring to quinn and fifield, both of whom will be trying out with nahl billings this summer. i'll include a 3rd d, desenko (sp), as three players coming into their senior year with very high expectations...and they faltered. maybe the upcoming group of seniors, with low expectations and not much hype surrounding them, will indeed surprise the naysayers. that group, as bantam a's, gave white bear lake, wayzata and shattuck some tough games from what i've heard.

Puck63 and NpGandy:

Gotta agree 100% with Chaska being in the mix, They have given EP fits over the years and their program is only getting stronger.

Regarding EP's defense, I think they got hurt last year by injuries and some position shifts. Fifield moved back to D after playing up the previous year. Bickle got moved back to D in January. Schreiber came in at D from Michigan but didn't dress for sections. Both Bickle and Schreiber were senior transfers. I think the team chemistry got out of wack IMHO.

For this year, Lau should be a great leader on the D. A lot will depend on how Smith sets up his lines but the talent is there, albeit most of these kids are unknowns but do the right things. They should have a combination of size and speed, depending on what Smith does in his selections. But the seniors have played together for a long time and it will be their chance to show the chemistry they developed thru the years. Don't expect the D to be in the box as much as in the past. EP will not be a pushover for any team. These kids always come to play.
