D3 After H.S.

With the growth of junior hockey in the upper midwest (USHL, NAHL, Junior B), there are more kids that are recruitable for DIII programs, and if they want to go to college, they should have every right to attend, and participate in DIII hockey. HS kids are still welcome, they just have to compete with 20yo for those varsity slots. To me, it sort of sucks for the HS kid, but its' the price of having a junior program in place to develop talent for the next level(s).

Seems it makes it hard for kids that know they aren't D-1 material yet want to play, but don't want to waste a year before going to college.

I think Donny Roberts was pretty much the last D3 coach who recruited high schoolers. He didn't actively recruit the kids from Juniors, but a lot of them wanted to play for him at Gustavus. It was a really good program... not many underclassmen played because we had a JV team that played against community colleges, other JV's (St. Thomas, St. Olaf) and some Jr. B teams... don't know much about it anymore.

I played at GAC for a year and then some... didn't get to play on the Varsity though... lost the love for playing the game, struggled with studies, had to hangem' up or drop out of school. It ended up just fine though. When were you at GAC Northcote?

Kodiak, Yeah I played on the GAC JV two years before hanging them up. Practiced with the varisty several times but never saw any game action. Then I was an assistant varsity coach to Don Roberts and Head JV coach for my Jr. & Sr. years. ('92-'96) ( I generally run into Donny every year at the state tourney) Playing and coaching for Donny was one of the best expreinces I had.

NorthcoteCupGuy, So if a guy wants to play D3, how does he get noticed by other schools all over the U.S. Must be some places not as good, not scouting every kid in MN. Give me some help please.

TRFan, If a player wants to be scouted, he needs to send a profile of himself to the school and somehow get connected with the coach

Most division III schools varsity programs rosters will show you that very few kids don't have junior time. Gustavus is a prime example. They still don't cut a kid from jv, but varsity is a full roster of ex junior players. Talent levels are way up and more and more kids are opting for juniors for a few years and then if there parents can afford it they will go to a dIII school. Playing juniors is not without a price also. You had better have some money stashed away somewhere because if you don't you may not be able to even play. there are some smaller schools up north that have hockey programs that still get kids out of highschool but from what I hear that won't last much longer either.

TRFan, you'll get a long way by just calling and talking to D3 coaches... go right to the source you know? They'll probably talk more about the school itself than hockey, because that's going to be the main draw of any D3 program... academics. Anyway, if the kid's good enough to play, just go to school and try out... no scolorships at D3 schools. I know that if he goes to Gustavus he will be able to play hockey (JV for sure... nobody gets, or used to get, cut), and if he's good enough, he will get noticed and will play varsity. At a school without a JV program, he'll have to prove himself right away, and may not be allowed the time needed to develop because he will get cut... at that point, it's time for IM's! There's no shame in trying.

I am not from Breck but i know it is a nice number I know currently they have John Adams on Boston College as well, a real stud. Next year, obviously Blake Wheeler. I am sure Breck people can tell you many more.

Breck has turned out 3 or more per year for a number of years now. Others I can think of currenty playing D1, Curry-BU, Brenk- Mankato, Dahl- Alaska, Nibbe -Yale, Joe Adams- BC, Dunlap - BU now transfered to Michigan, and a whole slew at DIII. Someone gave the advice earlier that a player should contact the DIII coach. That is true. It helps to have good grades, and I would suggest looking out east. The Nescac coaches for instance, do most of their looking out there, but given a heads up will come take a look, or more likely have someone they know take a look at a Minnesota player. Show me the money! Gustavus, St. Johns, St. Thomas, Hamline, St. Olaf, St. Norbert, Bethel, St. Marys, Concordia, Augsburg, Outside of MN Crookston, every D3 program in MN is a private school that costs upward to 10K a semester. So I would like to thank all the WESTERN WISCONSIN teams that Minnesotan's play at. Stout, RF, Superior, EuClaire, Anybody else see a glaring problem with this? I've always wondered why NDSU, UM-Moorehead, Winona, Northern St. SDSU, don't have teams.... Just my 2 cents, the other 98 goes to Microsoft......

That's exactly why these schools don't have hockey programs. And title 9 doesn't help either. I don't know for sure, but these guys all compete in D2 at most other sports, I think NDSU is D1 in football, but I don't think they would be allowed to compete in D3 athletics because they offer scholorships in their other sports... not sure about that though. You're right though, it's a lot of money, even at the Wisconsin schools, so the goals have to be greater than just playing college hockey.
