Who is the best coach in the state?

I disagree with Moorhead's coach being the best. I base this soley on last years State Tournament though, and I'm not sure if that's fair. They lost to AHA and never should have. Look at the talent level Moorhead had. Compare that to AHA who was no doubt good, but younger, less experienced, and physically weaker. AHA Trebil is no doubt VERY good at getting them to play a system come March and stick with it. He wins. Moorhead has a great program and I'm not saying he's not a great coach, but compared to Trebil last year, I think he got out done.

The point in post #241 is not about the time a coach puts in, nor about the impact of a coach on players. It is that the degree of a coaches impact on players that some are willing to give that is obnoxious, not to mention unrealistic. And that some coaches are willing to accept credit for their players winning performance (not to mention success in life) may be a little arrogant. A good coach is just that, a good coach. A not so good coach is just that, not so good at coaching. I am not sure now much real impact either has on the performance of players in the game of life. It may be slightly overrated. P.S. I agree with you Slappy, several "life lessons" can be learned in Bagley. With their record, must have very poor hockey coaching, don't you agree? I hope the players are at least learning some life skills, because it doesn't appear they are learning much hockey.

Junior Hockey it sounds like you are judging Morinville on one game not the state tournament.. Moorhead came out flat in that championship game, thats sports.. they also had two sivs trying to man the nets... the thing that sets Morinville apart is they are in that position year in and year out... and its not because of a weak section... they have dominated that section... the big argument against him is no state titles and I agree he needs one of those to cement him in..

I will go with Trebil for the best coach in the state after last years state tourny. what about some of the old coaches, like Ikola from Edina back in the 80's

Husker, I would say that I am using last years Championship game as an example of something that could be said about Moorhead for the past several years. You say ' Moorhead came out flat in that championship game, thats sports.' And I don't agree. I don't think it's a coincidence that teams win. I think it's preparation leading up to a game. I think Trebil does that very, very well. I think Morinville does it very well. That's the slim difference. As far as the rest of you discussing coaches impact on players lives. Ask anyone who played for John Wooden if they were impacted by him. Granted he was a college coach but I think the 'greats' like Wooden go above and beyond and invest more time into the kids.

By the way, we commoners don't often get the chance to talk to John Woodens' former players? If you talk to Bill Walton, be sure and tell him Knowlzee admired the way he played the game of basketball. Smart aleck, I know, but c'mon.

Probably some repeats here: 7AA Esse-Great Coach-Cloquet is ready to play night in and night out. Randolph-Great coach, has a lot of experience, Hounds are always tough in the playoffs. Sarsland-Very vocal, crazy man, but his tactics work year in and year out. Laroque-Done a fabulous job this year with the Grand Rapids team.

Hilltopper: I will respectively disagree with you. Aus does belong up there. When he started they were nothing. Along the way they lost kids to the likes of Totino and AHA. Now they are staying and he is winning. Centennial has been to 3 straight section finals. They have a State Title, Schwan Title, and two 3rd place titles in the Schwan Cup in the past 3 years. Centennial is also 3-0-1 vs. AHA led by Trebil who so many think is God on here. They are 9-0-3 in the Excel Center in the past 3 years.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/happy.gif ALT=":D">

And the fact that Centennial has a great youth program IS a testament to Aus since he has always been involved with it. Final point..... Totino Grace had been stealing Centennial's best for their title runs in the 90's before Centennial started winning more and more. Now the kids stay put. I think this has to do w/ Aus' involvement with the youth program and stressing the fact that they could win together if they stay together.

Hengen was AHA's leading scorer on their first tourney team. Hengen left after his freshman year. Josh Singer was another Centennial product on that team. His brother is now a junior for the Cougars.

Aus definately qualifies as one of the best ! He repeatedly expresses gratitude and ackowledgment for and towards his hard working and gifted players! He's very classy in his approach to the media and carries himself like a Pro on the bench! Him and Trebil as well as Morinville are excellent coaches! Lee and Ammerman and the rest of the D-Core gave Holy Angels their defensive blue line all night long and that, I believe is more than anything what cost M<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/glasses.gif ALT="8)"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/glasses.gif ALT="8)"> RHEAD the Title last year along with a little help from a very bad call and even at that Holy Angels spent most of the third on their heels! Blaming Morinville alone for that is lame at best! I figure he should have, if he didn't, get on Lee and Ammerman to meet the Stars at the blue line and a critical mistake was made if he didn't but Trebil keeping Frazee out of the starting position against Anoka in 2003 was even worse! alot of times its hard to tell just how good a coach is. A certain amount of success comes from the kids playing for him. For this reason i think the best coaches in the state are those of the teams that compete every year, even when the talent level is down. Many programs have been able to have such success, including Elk River, DE, GR, Cloquet, which must be attributed to the ability of their coaches to get the most out of their players. With this being said, I think Trebil from AHA is a genius, and as he showed last year during the tourney, is probably the best coach in the state right now. -minnhock muckraker-

Hey knowlze, The biggest "life lesson" the coaches in Bagley need to teach the team is after you learn how to skate with skill, speed and finesse, it then becomes extremely important to learn how to stop with your skates BEFORE you hit the boards! I agree slappy... Lee underperformed against AHA.. he left the goalies in tough circumstances several times and they were not good enough to save him.... he is a great player and deserved Mr. Hockey but for that one game he was not at his best...

I wonder if those players would do better this year if they were instructed by Sarsland, or Trebl, or Morinville? No seriously, good luck to your buddy at Bagley. All good programs started from some point. We appreciate the efforts of all coaches that care and are willing to spend the time to help players improve in this fine sport. To all players, keep working and having fun with this great game.

I don't think we are far off on meeting opinions on coaches. When I refer to Wooden's former players. I refer to his book, "They Call Me Coach" and the shows in which he is discussed on ESPN when they bring in him and his former players to talk about what they taught him and how big of a role that he had on their lives as people. I've never met him. But there is a lot of material in print and video that back up my statement.
