From Strib:

A 'Battle of the Sexes' in Warroad
Roman Augustoviz, Star Tribune

When the U.S. women's national hockey team plays the Warroad boys' team at 7:30 tonight, their meeting will count as one of the Warriors' 25 regular-season games because it fits all the criteria for a game.

The score will be kept, admission will be charged at the Gardens Arena, and Minnesota State High School League hockey rules will be followed.

"The one thing that has been bothering me about this game is I have this image of Bobby Riggs in my mind after he lost to Billy Jean King," Warroad co-head coach Dennis Fermoyle said, referring to the famous Battle of the Sexes in tennis in 1973. "I remember pulling for [Riggs] and was depressed he got thrashed by Billie Jean."

Tonight's game also is creating a stir, at least in Warroad where a full house of near 2,500 is expected.

"A number of people in town have said we have nothing to gain by winning, and it would be embarrassing to lose," said Fermoyle, whose Warriors are 6-3-2 this season after winning the Class 1A state title last March.

"When you are asked by the national team to play a game, it's hard to say, 'No,' " Fermoyle said.

"It's quite an honor that they would be interested in coming to play us," Warroad athletic director Craig Oftefdahl said. "It says a lot about our hockey community."

"Warroad is a great hockey town," said Gavin Regan, team manager of the U.S. women's national team. "We're here not so much to play, but more as of a thank you to all the Olympians they have had."

Fermoyle expects that checking -- allowed in boys' high school hockey but not in girls' -- won't be permitted tonight.

"We don't know exactly what we can do," Fermoyle said, "but [Tuesday] we worked on our penalty kills, two man and one man down.

"It's a little scary. Our girls' hockey coach [Scott Knutson] said every player on the U.S. team will be faster than any of ours."

Warroad is led by its first line of junior Aaron Marvin (5 goals, 16 assists, 21 points), and seniors Joe Harren (8-9-17) and Bob Anacabe (4-10-14).

"We are definitely not like Bobby Riggs in one way," Fermoyle said. "We are not overconfident."

• Canada's national women's team, the defending Olympics champion, regularly plays boys' Midget AAA teams in the Alberta Midget Hockey League. It is 7-8-2 in that league with five games left before the Olympics.

Coach Melody Davidson and her players said the boys' teams give Team Canada the kind of rigorous competition it needs to improve and be ready for international play.

This game intrigues me. I am very interested to see how a solid HS team matches up against the best women in the U.S.

Did you read the article posted above?! For as much as the girls complain about equality and wanting to play in the XCEL (even though they end up playing there for availability reasons) and other BS. Thanks to title 9 the GRHS band is only at 2 hockey games a year. I hope Warroad routes them.

i think this game is pretty cool to say the least, it would be one worth watching. this isnt pathetic or a joke, its almost like those parent games back in squirts, those wern't a joke were they? think of it as an honor, i would sure like to play hockey against the us womens national team. For any of you to brush the idea aside and call it a joke, is ludacris.

Thank god this isn't counted. Nothing against the US team or Warroad but the fact that a guys team and girls team are playing is ridiculous in my mind. Especially if it's going to count as a regular season game.
