I was just wondering why it is always a surprise when a southern team wins state? is it because they can't cheat and recruit or transfer like the private, cities, and even northern teams?

Southern Teams

Post by elliott70 »

It is surprising because for along time the North dominated with a few Twin City teams interspersed.

Later it was the TC teams.

In AA - A, at teh A level it has been the north and the private schools. So when someone else does it, it is a surprise.

No harm intended to those programs, but look in the record book. When it happens it is a SURPRISE!

The first year Jefferson left section 1 and went to section 5 was in 1981, (5 was quite a drop in talent from 1 back then) they ended the regular season with about a .500 record. 4 section wins, 3 state tournament wins and they ended up 17-8 or something close to that, and State champs. That Jefferson team wasn't anywhere near as good as the '80 team that finished 3rd or the 3 previous ones that JM beat in the section finals.

It would be tough to end up with a .500 record because you'd have to win at least 6 straight to win the State title. A quick glance only comes up with 2 teams that have even made the tournament with a sub .500 record; Apple Valley in '81 (10-13) and White Bear in '96 (10-14).

Why is it a surprise when a southern team is successful? Because it's only happened once and that was 29 years ago. Only twice has anyone from the south ever been close; '79 and '89. Both were probably before you were born, that's why it's a surprise. Rochester has had it's share of "free agents" just like any other program the past 10 years, it just hasn't helped.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... oldy313 at: 12/7/05 9:44 pm

EREMPIRE is still upset at the great Elk River choke that year in sections. 2000 was not an upset. You forget Blaine took the consolation bracket in 1999 after a crushing loss in the first round to Hastings when Hastings scored with less than a second to play. I talked with Scott Bjugstad before the 99-00 season and he calmly predicted a state championship that year. (And yes I know Elk River beat Blaine twice during the regular season that year, but then again, Blaine beat Elk River twice last year in the regular season, and Elk River went to state. Sometimes things just balance out over time.)I believe the score was 6-0 over Duluth East in the championship game. Oh, and those other players besides Bochenski; Matt Hendricks -St. Cloud State, Scott Foy- UND, Trevor Frischmon- Colorado College, and I am missing at least one other player. Not exactly powerhouses ? I guess if you say so.

moorhead

Post by hockey1512 »

id have to say that the aha moorhead game has got to be one of the biggest upsets. nobody in that rink thought that aha could pull off a win unless moorhead completely choked

Did I not say it was a choke? The difference was that last year, ER wasn't #1 in the State and even nation if I remember correctly. And Blaine didn't beat them 7-0 or something to that effect the last regular season game. You can't compare last year to 2000 at all. I will give Blaine credit, they walked through State, but I still believe ER was the best team that year. Upset, choke, whatever you wanna call it. Blaine has the trophy (back, we had it for a little while thanks to verb ) and ER doesn't. That's the way the cookie crumbles.

Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

Perhaps not a huge upset, however, having two "Northern" teams in the championship game (Roseau and Grand Rapids). Also, just a note to perhaps make this a bit of an upset. That particular Roseau team had not beaten Grand Rapids all the way up the youth ranks. (if i recall correctly) The only time they beat them was the State Championship game.
*Earlier in the season Rapids had beat Roseau at Memorial in Roseau

Roseau

Post by HockeyMan05 »

I remember watching Roseau in the '99 Tournament and I was completly amazed with that team. I remember a player on that team who during warm-ups took a slap shot and it either made the glass crack or just fall out of position, either way the target center crew had to replace the glass before the game could start. I wasnt very close to see what exactly happened but those would be my best guesses.

Their overall play was solid and with only 1 loss, I would not consider them winning the tourney an upset...
Heres a little summary of their '99 tourney:
4-2 Rochester Mayo (21-3-1)
6-2 AHA (25-1)
4-0 Hastings (23-4)

goldy may have it with the 81 Jags. they may have been the most pure upset winner.

They finished 16-8-1 after running the table in sections and state so they must have had like a 10-8-1 season.

The only thing is that there was no clear favorite that year. They beat Irondale in the Final.

So, there was no David vs Goliath type upset.

Packer Boy-

although it wasn't to win state, i always hear about this mystical SSP team that was undefeated and lost to Henry Sibley in Sections way back in the day. I hear that was a remarkable upset. I hear that was SSP's best chance to break the streak of never winning state. Can u tell me a bit about the team/game....when it was...how big of an upset....were you on the team then?? stuff like that! thanks!

Big upset

Post by packerboy »

It was a huge upset. It was 1973 section final. I was in the stands.

SSP was undefeated and had beaten Sibley badly twice in conference play. SSP was ranked #1 all year. They were coached by Doug Woog and loaded with talent and could score "at will".

It probably was their best team and their best chance to win it, althought here have been others.('81 with Housley for one)

They had a number of D1 kids and they had made it to the semis the year before as juniors... losing to Grand Rapids 5-4.

The thing I remember most about the game is that SSP just couldnt put away their scoring chances and Sibley was very opportunistic about theirs. In addition, Sibley did find a way to shut them down. I think the score was 3-2.

Thats all I remember about it.

A lot of good players

Post by packerboy »

I think so Neut. But they were loaded. I think both Yackels(Ken jr) were still on the team. They had a lot of very good players.
