Re: Classification for 2027-2029
Your analysis is good but forgets that Elk River is combined with Zimmerman and is over 1633 and the Bloomingtons together also push that number above the A/AA threshold -- there might be others as well Good catch. The MSHSL https://www.mshsl.org/schools/activities?activity=133&page=0 lists the...

Re: Classification for 2027-2029
48 would be a decent number, and then find a way to get six teams in each section. 1 and 2 would have byes, 3 plays 6, 4 plays 5, in the openers. Section 7 and Section 8 could end up even more spread out than they already are. Section 7 and 8 would likely be merged as there are only 5 "norther...

Re: Classification for 2027-2029
Quick math tells me there should be about 45 teams in AA next year. There were 107 AA & A teams last year. AA teams that drop to A due to the new classification: Northfield, Owatonna, Rochester Mayo, Winona, New Prague, Hastings, Jefferson, Grand Rapids/GW, Elk River, Bemidji, Alexandria, Buffal...

Re: Classification for 2027-2029
Bravo for (finally!) raising the classification for girls. 1634 means the top 32 enrollments for AA. There will likely be more than 32 teams with opt-ups and co-ops but this is a great step to balance girls HS hockey. This should result in about 6 teams in each AA section which will eliminate first ...

Shakopee's 8th grade leading scorer last year switched to Tonka this year. Legit per MSHSL rules but the rich get richer.

Re: Official Coaching Openings - 2025-26
This trend is truly sad as parents keep rushing their kids through the process PARENTS- Colleges don't want your kid until he's 21 now...Slow the F down..If you think sending your 15-16 year old to Moose Jaw Canada is the answer then please put down those pot gummy bears because they are making you...

Re: Strib ruins sports hubs
I saw on Twitter they will have the archive stats available again soon. I think it looks pretty sharp and if it means more articles and wider coverage of sports, I'm all for it. As for subscription, it's a business, they need income to provide content. (Or you find a way around it to read the articl...

Section Changes
Lot of talk about the boys section changes, on the girls side, relatively minimal changes. While they desperately need an overhaul*, there were some minor changes for the better, with enrollment listed: Winona 1A --> 1AA (1302) Mankato East 1AA --> 2A (1110) South Central 1AA --> 1A (2423) Austin 1A...

Re: Section Venues
I'm not speculating what the sections can or can't afford, although I would question their financial decisions if they are paying "tens of thousands". The size of a venue does not change the cost of renting ice, Ridder should cost no less than Mariucci, and should be fairly similar to any ...

Re: Section Venues
There is no way in the world it costs $100k to rent Mariucci for two games/one night. I'd be surprised if it was over $10k.

Re: Tonka - New Prague
Give me a break. It's an unsportsmanlike move and has become commonplace for Minnetonka and this coaching staff in particular to beat down weaker opponents. Other coaches and programs take a very different approach with games of this nature, believing it's an opportunity to teach more important lif...

Re: Tonka - New Prague
Agree that Tier I/Tier II is not the solution, that was terrible on the boy's side. But at least MSHSL thought outside the box on that one, albeit in a lazy way. As I mentioned above, first they need to factor the number of teams in girls hockey. Here are the number of teams in the past several year...

sadly, the game has to be played. But why? Shots in other recent "playoff" games: Farmington 76, South Central 4 Lakeville South 59, Rochester Century/JM 11 Andover 58, Anoka 7 Hill-Murray 58, St Paul/Two Rivers 5 Holy Family 58, Waconia 7 Andover 57, Forest Lake 6 (Semi-final game...

Tonka - New Prague
I know the girls forum is pretty much dead but time for the annual "what the heck are we doing, MSHSL??" post. Tonka beats New Prague 22-0 tonight. Shots 100-2, not a typo. What good came of this game? I'm sure some will blame Tonka for not taking their foot off the gas, maybe they didn't,...

Re: 6AA Playoffs
The bracket says the 6AA final is at Ridder Feb 26, 6:00pm.
2AA final is at Braemar Feb 27, 7:00pm as it has been the past few years.
So no 2AA/6AA back-to-back like in years past, which I would love to see again. Ridder isn't big enough for the doubleheader.

Re: Class A SF #1 seed 7A Hermantown (19-8-2) vs #4 seed 4A Mahtomedi (18-11-0)
Mahtomedi jerseys are hideous with the number on front and "Zephyrs" on the back. Look like practice jerseys.

Re: 2024 Girls State High School Hockey Tournament
3rd period meltdown against andover in 22. Undisciplined is the word I'd use to sum up the last few years of Tonka hockey in the state tournament and that's all on coaching. That 3rd period meltdown (and dumb penalty) and the way the coaches reacted was a perfect snapshot. And the constant barking ...

Re: 2024 Girls State High School Hockey Tournament
I'd have to watch the replay but the second goal seemed like a fluke, Distad found a loose puck and whacked at it and it went off the defender's stick and over the goalie's head. The first Tonka goal was a great effort and snipe by Finnegan seconds after Edina had that amazing pass and goal by Halvo...

Re: 2024 Girls State High School Hockey Tournament
It isn't anything new to see an Edina goalie look a little shaky in the semi only to play better in the final. No offense, but... what? Edina has had the most consistent goaltending in girls hockey for the last several years with arguably the best - certainly most decorated - goalie in state histor...

Re: 2024 Girls State High School Hockey Tournament
Agree about Tonka coaching, they have the best talent every year and blow it every year. The difference between the two head coaches in that game tonight was glaring. How long will Tonka parents put up with this? Zahn was the best goalie in the country tonight. She played an amazing game, probably t...

Re: Games of the Night
Dodge County looks like they could make a run at the class A title. They crushed Northfield (SOG: 42-12) and had very competitive games with Orono and Centennial. Not sure how dependable the goaltending is but they have a few nice skaters. I'd say today answered my question, goaltending is more tha...

Re: 2024 Girls State High School Hockey Tournament
So question for those of you paying more attention than me. Should we be worried with the plethora of 8th and 9th graders on the varsity teams of the state participants? Andover is the only team I've seen made up of mostly juniors (a ton) and seniors. Which is what you normally see on the guys side...

Ahh, yes, I forgot about Hill-Murray always hosting at Aldrich even if they're not the higher seed. Maybe that will change when St Thomas builds their arena? In 4A, I went back and it appears the championship game is hosted by the higher seed. Last year Simley hosted at their home Vet's arena, the y...

Re: 2024 Section Tournaments
North losing was shocking, they had a potent offense but, like a few other games recently, their goaltending seems to have let them down. I didn't see the game, going off of stats. Good for Rosemount for getting back to state, I'm afraid they will be in running time however as they're not a very str...
