Re: Pine City to Mississippi 8

Good move for the Dragons. I guess the Snake River does make its way to the St. Croix, which eventually hooks up with the Mississippi, so it sort of makes sense geographically.

Re: BHS Hockey Podcast - Turning Points

As an outsider it seems like the jumpstart in many of the private schools’ success was bringing in high level coaches who stayed there a while to build the programs. Pauly (not sure when he started at Benilde but wouldn’t be surprised if it was mid-late 90’s when their success started), Trebil, the...

Re: Turning Points

Fun topic. Hockey59 beat me to the obvious one in recent memory for the Greyhounds. I wasn't at the Anoka loss, but that certainly felt like rock bottom for an East team that didn't look like it was going anywhere. I was, however, at the game at Elk River a few nights later when the Hounds busted ou...

Has anyone ever seen Karl and Lee in the same place at the same time? I know I haven't... Yeah, Karl should have taken a selfie of us at the 7AA semifinals  Lee Next year we'll have to provide photographic evidence when we have our annual 7AA playoff meeting of the minds. Though one year I...

2010 Tourney in Retrospect

For the past couple years I've been writing up looks back at the State Tournament that took place ten years prior to the current year. It's interesting to look back on these teams with some added distance to see if the talent they had actually had matched our perceptions at the time, and how those r...

Do you have East/Cloquet double ot section final 1991? Karl?
Afraid not. I have East's 91 Tourney games, but have never seen a video of that section final or even of Fitzgerald's GWG.

Re: Role of the Minnesota State High School League

My only contribution to this conversation will be a general observation about how the Duluth area seems to magnify this issue (if it really is an issue) in a way other places don't. In the Metro, people don't necessarily love it, but there's an understanding that player movement is a pretty common t...

Re: Greatest Games That Never Were

Fun story, ESPG. Anoka was the top seed in the metro bracket of Region 2 that year, and they did beat East by a goal in their regular season meeting, so they were almost certainly the favorites there. Interestingly enough, I was a resident of Anoka at that time, though I was also one, so I think I c...

Re: Edina 2010's All-Decade Team

Hey, glad someone else went in on this. We'll have to find a free Friday night at the X to match these Hornets against my all-decade team Hounds. Hard to argue with that assemblage of talent. BFC, I do have a very, very large spreadsheet where I try to track post-HS careers of players from prominent...

Greatest Games That Never Were

This seems like a fitting topic given our lack of sports right now. Which games do you wish would have happened, but never did? For example, Lakeville North vs. Edina in 2015: two-time defending state champ versus the undefeated #1. I realize they did play in the regular season, but that would've be...

Re: Section 5AA 20-21

This could be among the more interesting sections to watch next season. For about a decade now it's been a 3-way race between Blaine, Centennial, and Maple Grove, with Anoka bursting through once and some brief glimmers from Champlin. Blaine was usually the frontrunner. Now, it seems safe to say tha...

Re: Why high school sports

There's so much passion and pride. Also, it's generally when athletes start to "get it". You still have situations where one person can single handedly take over a game, but for the most part, teams start paying within their system. This part, definitely, along with the obvious passion and pride. E...

Re: Fun With the Transitive Property!

Biggest upset on the list? Sartell losing to Sauk rapids? Either that or Sauk Rapids losing to Bagley. If you're losing to Bagley, you're in some pretty select company. That's certainly one of the most impressive transitive property chains I've ever seen. I don't think we usually get that close to ...

Re: Biggest Tourney upsets

There are too many "upsets" to count for my favorite team. I think the one that stands out to me most recently would be 2005 when WBL, led by Ryan Braun and David Grun got upended by unranked Duluth East. Fond memories of that one! East had no business winning that game, but Chris Sall stood on his...

Re: Biggest Tourney upsets

The three biggest in my time following closely are almost certainly Moorhead over Edina in 09, Lakeville South over East in 12, and East over Edina in 15. East/Edina had the biggest ranking gap, and probably the biggest skill gap, though on the flip side the team that pulled the upset was a power pr...
