Cap Off The High School Hockey Season With a Great Book

Scarlet Ice, the story of John Janavaras and his Mankato West Scarlets Hockey team, is an Amazon.com best seller. The nonfiction story is vividly written and it takes readers through the Scarlets 1994-95 season, a season in which they lost sophomore John Janavaras to a meningitis outbreak in early F...

Too Many Mentions of An Unmentionable Topic

My only criticism of Lou's commentary during the AA championship game was the repeated references to spinal cord injuries. Please know that I wish no one would ever have to suffer from such an injury, and my heart and admiration goes out to people who live impaired lives. But with the Jablonski boy...

Re: Tournament Lacked Close Games

One of the winner bracket quarters that ended up being a one goal game resulted from a garbage goal scored with eight or nine seconds left in regulation. The Edina-BSM game was probably the tournament's b...

Tournament Lacked Close Games

I don't think this year's tourney was as good as we have seen. There was only one overtime game in winner bracket games; and a fair number of games that were over in the second period. Maybe I expected too much.

Keep The Season Going By Reading Scarlet Ice

Scarlet Ice reached No. 1 on Amazon.com this week among hockey books. Great post-season reading about a Minnesota high school hockey team that was up against it all year, and a team that suffered tragedy worse that BSM.

Mankato East vs. West tonight, Jan. 12, 2012

West should get back on the winning track tonight, though when these two cross-city rivals meet up, anything can happen. A Cougars win tonight would make their season.

Ron Beck's Absence on the Hockey Hub List

One player not on the Hockey Hub list that deserves at least honorable mention is Ron Beck, who tended net for the International Falls Broncos during their first power trip in the mid-1960s. Beck played goalie during a three year stint and never lost a game for the Broncos dynasty. All-state and All...
